Cold Start Intake (A) Camshaft Positioning Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1)

I changed the valve cover gasket. All seemed to go well then a few days later got the reduced engine power fault. Bad misfire. Hooked up the code reader it suggested the P052B code and several misfires. After a lot of reading, I replaced the CAMshaft sensor (intake and exhaust) and the crankshaft sensor. I also got P0016 and P0012. Engine still running rough after initial start up and service engine light on (reduced power ). Am I missing something? Now I read where the HPFP might be an issue, or I need to replace all the injectors. Any insights. This is a 2011 Z4 E89 3.0L twin Turbo sDrive 35i.

hi,

what diag tool did you use to get these codes?

they make sense, but you should really use ISTA+. I can help you set up a laptop with ISTA+

based on these codes first I would've cleaned the VANOS solenoids and leave the sensors inplace

did you check the sensor for not working? how do you know they were bad?

cheers

Take it to your Indy, you have already spent more money on it than they would have charged you to diagnose it.
Get someone who knows exactly what they are doing, no criticism intended....

I agree with your approach of changing those 2 sensors. VANOS can also have an impact on that code so also another good suggestion.

Bit suspicious that you've only just finished changing the VCG before these codes appeared though. Have you checked everything over again to make sure you don't have an oil leak somewhere getting into a harness or oil in the spark plug wells?

Thanks for the responses. I used an OBD II Bosch diag tool. I’ve also replaced the vac hoses to the wastegate filters. I will pull the vanos sensors next and clean them. I did not check the cam and crank sensors before replacing (will have to look up how to do that). The next step will be to have it towed to the dealer. Funny thing is it starts fine and runs good for about a minute then the things start chugging like it is bad out of time. Which it probably is. I will let you guys know if cleaning the vanos helps. Can the ECM/PCM be reset somehow?

That sounds like the issue is related to VANOS. 60 seconds is the duration of the cold start routine in the ECU, for 60 seconds after a cold start it runs in open loop fuelling and has different VANOS position setpoints amongst other things during that time. After the 60 seconds is up the fuelling goes closed loop and the VANOS returns to the normal operation setpoint.

It could also be O2 sensor related but you would normally see a different error code for that. The Bosch tool probably isn't seeing all the codes though, you need a BMW specific tool like INPA or ProTool to get a real idea of what's happening.

Still waiting time to pull Vanos sensors and clean. I also already replaced all the coil packs and spark plugs. Thanks again. I will post again once the Banos have been checked!
