Vogtland Coilovers

Anyone have experience with these? Research so far suggests these are basically the ST STX, which is in itself identical to a KW Variant 1 without the stainless steel body.... Is that correct?

They seem to be an exceptional value alternative to Bilstein B12 set up, with the bonus of adjustable ride height. Before I push the button it would be good to hear anyone’s experience with them...

I’ve used these before on a e93.
I believe they are made by another well known brand, they could be kw yes.
They appeared to be of good quality and offered a decent ride quality and I would happily recommend.
I can’t say unfortunately what they would be like on a z4 though.

Thanks Bazza, helpful none the less!

I read somewhere that E46 coilovers fit E85 and they are the same. Vogtland advertises two part numbers and the E46 are £100 cheaper. Anyone verify? Assume vehicle weight / loading must be a factor and life not quite that easy :D

E46 - 595 Euros

E85 - 689 Euros

There's a slight difference in the rear between the two cars, I think it was the spring length if I remember correctly. I only know of this because HSD sold my friend an E46 kit as a E85/86 kit ("in development") and the rears were far too high (higher than SE) when it was supposed to be slammed - queue me changing the rear springs/perches a few times until they finally sent us the right ones. Pay the extra, do the job only once.

Thanks lucasxdiniz

I've been dull enough to do a bit more research and found the TUV certficate for each system :?

TUV - ST STX
TUV - Vogtland

...the measurements and most of the specs are identical. But some important differences:

Bump Travel

- ST extended by 25mm front and 20mm rear
- Vogtland extended by 20mm front and 10mm rear

Main Spring

- ST is Progressive
- Vogtland is Linear

..which leads me to believe the ST option will be better for road use.

Tüv report says that both are linear in the front and progressive in the rear.
Also the measurements of the springs is the same (same lenght, thickness of wire, number of turns etc)
Linear springs are less comfortable on small bumps but give a more predictable cornering characteristic.
In general the nose dives less.

No info on the dampers/absorbers though.

My guess is that KW uses springs made by vogtland. Vogtland is a famous spring manufacturer and in all the kw factory tour visits I've never seen infrastructure that can make springs or have I seen the raw materials (which are hard to miss).
I don't know if vogtland uses KW dampers though.

Awesome information thank you. Just what I need. I think these are basically the same then?

Food for thought
