981 Boxster GTS

It's a PDK, which I had to go for as the missus just won't drive a manual.....actually I think she won't ever touch a paddle and just leave it in auto every time. She used to drive the CSL only in full auto, even when it would bunny hop down the road in the morning during it's 15 minute warm up. The GTS definitely excels in lots of ways, and I think they're quite a rare sight on the UK road, which is important to me and part of the reason why I have stuck with the MC for 5 years.

That does look very nice! 8)

I'm more of a manual fan, but I've never heard a bad word about the PDK.

Enjoy collecting it. :D

Firstly it’s not nice slating a car when there’s a member that has just bought one but I’ve spoken to Greg81 via PM in the past about 718’s so he knows my thoughts, plus he’s by no means precious about it and I’ve no doubt sticks two fingers up to what I say which is exactly how it should be.....

Reading your remarks about the 570 and Audi rung a bell with me and the 718 GTS, hugely capable at getting up to high speed but the theatre just wasn’t there for me. You obvs know how the M’s are and especially with a GruppeM or similar fitted the cars a riot on every trip out should you want it, so much character it’s hilariously theatrical. You can’t have that with the turbo boxer engine, 60, 70, 80 etc, came up incredibly quickly but you simply didn’t know it, a mere small rise in engine note doesn’t cut it. Having such an incredible chassis just made the whole experience worse not better, so frustrating that the car had everything it needed to be brilliant yet lacking in one of the two most important aspects, chassis and engine note. I knew deep down early on that we weren’t going to gell so I got out, thankfully before the 4.0 was announced. You win some you lose some. The 718 is a superb car with better tech than a 981 and it’s great that Greg for example is happy with his, but going on what you say about your wants from a car you’ve made absolutely the right choice, something I should have done at the time.

Absolutely spot on, which is why the Z4M is such an interesting proposition. It's as equally sh*t as it is good, so you drive around the crap ride, suspension, brakes, interior quality....as it gives you rewards back in theatre and drama. My lady wife says my MC sounds like it going to explode when it gets to 8k rpm.....I think that's a good thing

My mate decided to go 718 simply because of a longer warranty, though I also think it’s because he’s not a noise hooligan that also played a large part in his decision

Correct on all fronts. Everyone wants different things out of a car so there's no right or wrong. My decisions were based on various opinions and my own experiences as you say so none taken. For me it's about a newer car, long warranty etc etc. I personally don't find the noise of the 718 dull at all as it certainly growls in sport mode and can be driven quietly if desired, but engine note was by no means a deal-breaker for me

OP got the car he wanted, and I mine so it's win-win for all involved :D

Absolutely Greg, if everyone wanted the same it would be a boring old world...but yours is a much more interesting colour than my boring old white (I had a choice between white or silver). Also, you’re definitely not alone loving the 718, a lot of my car liking mates much prefer the 718, it’s a lot quicker in the real world and has sharper lines across the styling (I actually prefer every design angle on the 718 v the 981, but the front bumper being so straight lined and flat is a real let down).

981 GTS’s aren’t exactly clogging up the classifieds though as you know, it’s a case of taking the right car rather than having the luxury of being picky on colour I guess. I agree totally the 718 looks better than the 981 in every panel from every angle, the front end especially, but having said that the 981 GTS has a good front too with the flared air intakes, much much better than the 2.7 or S which look so dated now imo.

Pair of buggers, you’ve got me wanting another Boxy now.......

If he has, he has picked a great week to get warmed up to a convertible.

You need to get back in the convertible game Paul...it’s been too long mate. If you’re thinning a little too much on top allow me to sub you a nice hat sir.

Completely agree on all the comments here.

The £45k ish bracket provides some really nice options currently (R8 V10 Gen 1, 981 GTS, V8 Vantage Roadster, F Type R, 911 Gen 2) were all cars I looked at.

I actually think the 981 GTS is the most rounded car of them all and should hold its value well.

However, I went for an Alfa 4C just to have something completely different (had a 981 S previously) and after a full suspension geometry reset and a map its one of the most fun cars I have ever owned.

GTS next though....

When you’re out of hospital you’ll need to get back into a GTS....a lovely Carmine red one would do the trick!

Have you picked this little cracker up yet squire....?? :D

Yep, picked it up on Friday...and what an amazing car this is. It's a perfect blend for a road car in the UK. The ride, handling, steering are all amazing....but the stand out element is the engine with the PSE. It's tuned differently in this to any other Porsche and the noise is absolutely phenomenal. It's even a little bit anti-social in sports plus with the bonkers machine gun fire coming out the back on downshifts. If you love 2 seaters sports cars (which we all do here) then you really should drive one.

I'll write a proper review over the next week, and add comparisons with the other things I've had/driven.

PSE is quite something. I turn it off when I enter my street as my wife tells me she can hear me coming from way down the street!

Enjoy!
