Michelin Pilot Sport 3 - £120 - thoughts

Good choice  I would say it's worth paying the extra for the Michelins. Wear far better than the goodyears & conti's. uniroyal's rainsport 3 worth a look too. Great tyres & very reasonably priced.

I run Pilot Sport 3's all round and the grip is brilliant even in the wet, can't rate them highly enough :driving:
What he said :D
Now on PS4 and they are equally good if not better

Hey

Once again, sorry for late reply.

I have done just over 1000 miles in the PS4's now.

I tried full braking from 40-0mph, 50-0mph and 60-0mph on a clear road with my Goodyears and then did the same with my PS4's. I didn't time or measure any distances but just from 'what it felt like' i could say there was maybe a 5-10% difference in gforces pulled. So based on that very rough gauge, I can say they feel more grippy.

I haven't had a chance to take my car on the track, so that would be the best guage i guess.

However, this biggest upgrade by far was going from runflats to non runflats. My god its so much better! Feels like a completely new front suspension set up! So dam smooth now and no more wiggly whilst going down country roads. Way better than I was expecting. Can't wait to get the rear tyers done now!

The tires also feel more grippy when braking around a corner too as there is less chance of being pushed around by the walls of the runflats. Overall 10/10 would buy again!

Thanks for the update! Can I assume you went from Goodyear F1 A2 Runflats to the PS4?
Also let us know how you get on with the rears, when you get round to fitting them. I've not heard of a staggered runflat/non-runflat tyre set up before but I guess it makes sense if you're in transition.

I've got the Goodyears atm. Be interesting to see if anyones got (non-runflat) comparison between F1's and PS4's?

Cheers!

Yep went from F1 to PS4. Still have F1 on rear.

I think the rears will be a great change. When i go over a bump the front feels nice and soft now but the rears still feel that sharp judder, so hopefully that will be cleared up.... god knows why they install runflats on bmws, so horrid in comparison.

The other thing i notice is when i go up a bumpy hill i notice sometimes the slightest bit of traction loss due to the tyres 'levitating' for a fraction of a second due to the bouncy tough nature of the run flat tyre walls. I really hope the softness of non run flat rears will keep the traction, but maybe im being ambitious.... i do notice the extra traction on the fronts when driving roads with odd camber / bumps etc.

Overall i think the main thing people should do is just change to non run flats, then if you have a spare £20 upgrade to ps4.

I see your from scotland! Im tempted to do a road trip around there next May (ish). I love mountains, lakes and good roads, so hoping there will be a few there!

Regarding tyre wear on country/ A roads, could you roughly say how much longer they last for? 5-10%? Or difficult to say given different driving patterns etc?

I ran continental contact 5's on my remapped 335d got 6k miles out the rears. replaced with mpss had done 10k miles on them when I sold the car & roughly 3/4 mm left.

Thats a huge difference! Given a maybe 20% difference in price (max) it seems worth it!

Thanks for the update. I think the most difference you'll feel is in the rear? Keep us posted when you make the change.

I don't often go over bumpy hills, but occasionally I'll hit a pot hole (nothing major) whilst taking a corner. This due to the runflats feels like a miniature earthquake and sets the rear off. Like you said because they can't absorb the impact, it reverberates to the entire axle. This is mostly that twitchy feeling you get, but yet the car is still planted. Then occasionally pushes my rear out completely and that's when I get traction loss. Don't quote me on that, I'm just explaining as best as I can what I feel is happening for me!

Got the crappy runflat winter tyres on at the moment, but got a new set of F1's non-runflat for summer. So really looking forward to how these feeeel, and obviously perform :driving:

Cheers, Kis.

Go and take a look at http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/. It's a website with thousands of aggregated independent reviews on pretty much any tyre you can think of. Have a browse around some of the less 'premium-priced' offerings (Toyo T1R, for example), and compare the user feedback/scoring with that of the Michelins.

Also, take a look down the right-hand side, and read through some of the 2016 "Summer Tyre Tests" for hard data on grip and stopping distances etc., as well as journalists' feedback. The Michelins are always thereabouts, but there are plenty of other tyres for consideration.

For buying, take a look at Ebay. I've found it to be cheaper than many of the so-called tyre specialists, in the case that you want to have your tyres fitted locally.

Good shout!

Safe to say the Michelin PS4's have killed the competition... You can buy them for ~£108 each, so surely it's got to be worth the extra £20 you would pay in comparison to a good cheaper brand!? They are new technology too. Some useful links below.

Absolutely agreed. They look like truly excellent tyres from the test and review feedback, so well worth it for road driving.
