Aftermarket Sport Exhaust (Muffler)

I have been looking around, but without much success, for an aftermarket Cat Back exhaust to repace the manufacturer std. on by Z4 3.0si Sport roadster (2006 model). Not so much looking for HP increase, but would like to enhance the sound of the beautiful Straight 6 motor.

I have Emailed Milltek to see if they can offer anything to suit the 3.0si (I know they did one for the 2005 on 3.0i) but can't seem to get any response.

Does anyone have any suggestions re the 3.0si version?

Defor,

Firstly welcome.. :D

Secondly, you could try Hayward & Scott - they made the system on my M Coupe and it sounds gorgeous (if I do say so myself :P). They would happily make one up on a 3.0, although the only downside is that they they'll likely need the car for a few days, unless they've already done a 3.0 Z4...

Worth the time though - they're based in Basildon, Essex....

Hi Sixspeed, thanks for the response and info on Hayward and Scott.

I have not been in contact yet, as Milltek eventually replied to confirm they manufacture and supply both a full system with race CATS and a CAT back system. Couldn't give me a price though, as you have to go through one of their dealers.

Having contacted a couple to check on price and availability, it seems the price ranges from £470 to £649 (all for the same thing, i.e. supply only).

Thorneysport, Milton Keynes was the highest price and they stock the full and CAT Back system. Interestingly, they offer a full pre and after install diagnostics plus a full remap of the ECU and advise up to 30 bhp plus increase on a Z4. I dare not ask how much.

bumping this, looking to purchase a milltek for my 3.0si but wonering how this turned out. did milltek say they offered both an exhaust for the 3.0i and 3.0si or it was one model fits all?

Hi Dubbledown.

Unfortunately, it didn't turn out at all.

Nobody Miltek agent could convince me that they could do it. They all insisted that the 2005 model would fit the 2006 model. I managed to find drawings on a BMW parts site which showed clearly that the back box and mount position were of a completely different design for the 2006 model. In the end I gave up and haven't checked since.

Please will you let me know how you get on.

Thanks

Defor,

Can you please send me these designs? I had a local Milltek distributor in the US look up ETKA part numbers and said it should fit. How differnet can the floor pans be? Are the hangers in different spots?

Just to put things in perspectives, I looked up the exhaust for both the E85 3.0i and E86 3.0si. Not only different engines, but convertible vs coupe and both show identical part numbers...

Hi Dubbedown,

Thats fine and dandy, but what year?

The pre 2006 model, which Miltek make an exhaust for is this part:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BT52&mospid=47797&btnr=18_0499&hg=18&fg=20

which it's clearly visible has a completely different mounting for the back box to this one, which is for a 2006 on model as shown here:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BU52&mospid=49303&btnr=18_0654&hg=18&fg=20

Its not the difference between 3.0i and 3.0si that makes the difference, it's the year of manufacture.

That's why I asked for you to let me know how you got on. I got very confusing responses from Miltek distributors and other replacement specialist exhaust makers. Most, including Miltek distributors told me that they could easily supply for a pre 2006 model 3.0si but, at the time, which was a year plus ago, they told me that the 2006 model was too new for developing a repalcement exhaust. Other Miltek distributors told me they could supply one and there was no difference. Having seen the different illustrations and part numbers gave me no confidence to proceed. Not until a supplier cold confirm without doubt, that they could supply one for a 2006 on model.

Good luck and I would be very interested to know how you get on.

guess i'll be the guinea pig on this...

i dont mind having the shop do a little fabbing and custom work, but if it's a nightmare of an install, i'd be pretty pissed. cutting all that stock piping just to find out it doesn't work that is.

ugh...

oh yea, only differnece i see is how the muffler mounts. im more concerned about the piping. as long as that routes correctly w/o getting in the way of the heatshield, i think this should work. i've already installed an aftermarket muffler meant for the older z4 and was successfully able to mount the muffler by making a custom hanger. will keep you guys posted.

I installed a B&B Triflo unit on my 03 Z4 about six months after I bought the car. Great sound without being too loud and "ricey", easy install, very well built and reasonably priced. B&B claim a power gain, but as with you, I don't care. It sounds good. Check with the manufacturer or Bavarian Auto for price and figment info.
