In the 'Borders'
In an ASDA this evening and they have a new line of motor oils
They are doing a 5-30W Fully synthetic BMW LLO4 oil for £22 quid. 5 litres. Seems great value. Anybody else noticed this product or tried it??

Doubt it will do any harm but i wouldn't run it "longlife" every 7/8k then switch it but i would do that even if high end oil was used
5w30 Fully Synthetic can be bought even cheaper if that's what you want http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5W30-AC-DELCO-SUPREME-PLUS-FULLY-SYNTHETIC-ENGINE-OIL-PETROL-AND-DIESEL-5-LITRE-/161155184311?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item258598f6b7

Yes I never use my oils long life either. So at that price I think I will give it a shot.
That ACDelco looks a great deal also
Been made aware of counterfeit oils on Ebay (not saying the link is a counterfeit) that place looks genuine .
I nearly bought a 20 litre drum of correct spec oil from another site but you cannot be sure with some sites of what your getting .

Too much oil snobbery around the moment, AC Delco used to be the recommended Ford oil, not sure if it still is but like Castrol it's been totally dismissed as crap for years. Yet I stripped down an MGB engine years ago for a mate which had 120k+ miles under it's belt and there wasn't a bit of wear on it. He worked for BT and regularly used the top up oil they used for their vans which was Castrol GTX so go figure.

At the mo I have Motul LL04 (French) oil in my Zed. Motul oil never hits the headlines like Mobil 1 or Castrol Edge does but for those who know, it's one of the finest oils out there. I've used it in my bikes for years inc the present BMW for 1000s of miles, never had a problem. General rule of thumb, if Opie recommend it, it'll be fine. As far as buying oil from E.Bay goes, I'd be very cautious, there are a lot of counterfeit goods on there and I wouldn't put my engine at risk on a "maybe". Always use a bona fide oil supplier for peace of mind would be my advice. Sometimes stuff is cheap for a reason

I've used that ebay company in the past for GM Dexos2 LL04 oil. It's £20.95 at the moment for 5 litres. The bottles are hologram labelled and the delivery is fast.

Hi toe side , I agree with all the above. With regards to long life, as I have my Z serviced every year regardless of miles done ( Maximum to date is 8,500 miles) this is never a worry, combined with the fact that the engine burns oil and I refill at least a litre every 3 months so it gets fresh oil regularly. This is a feature of the E85 not a problem with my car thank goodness. However I did have to research this fact as this is the first car I have ever owned that had this design feature!!! :o Tesco have just launched a new range of oils and I think they include our spec. ( oil snobs look away ).

You must do a lot of miles, my Zed does not go through a litre of oil in 3 months! I maybe top up a litre once a year between services.

The oil that goes in my Zed is what the Indy buys in bulk, it's the fully synthetic long life stuff that Vauxhall dealerships use apparently.

When I say I top up once a year I mean I call in to the Indy between MOT and oil change visits and he tops me up with the draught stuff.

I wouldn't put this in my car when Castrol Edge is available for less than £30 for 4 litres.
Not to say that there is anything wrong with the oil but the saving over a premium brand is minimal spread over the time it's in your engine.

Where is castrol edge priced at less than 30 quid for 4 litres?

Cheapest I found was £34.99 from eurocarparts.

Good price for Edge Jimbo...........cheaper than Costco
Yes as as long as the oil meets spec I will buy (and the price is good).
The bigger the company/provider and the more transparent its supply the better.
TBH non of us would really know the difference between pouring in 'sludge master 20-50' or the best oil our tribological experts can offer so we can only rely on the spec on the can! :erm:

+1

I have had many cars over the years and used cheap and the more expensive oils depending what cash I had in my pocket at the time and "HONESTLY NEVER" noticed any difference in running or performance or how the oil looked and felt on oil changes when drained.

Another good source of correct spec oil at a budget price

I used to use Slick 50 on my RS2000 but stopped when I read somewhere that it congealed in the sump and could block oilways and filters ..ill see if I can find the link

If you buy anything from ebay you can't have confidence that it is the real deal. I could make a fortune buying s**t oil in bulk then packaging it up as Castrol Edge and flogging it.

I'm not saying this is what it is but if I needed to know the oil was it said it was, I wouldn't buy from ebay

So what is the norm list of oils suggested by BMW or other official sources?

There's a full list of recommended oils on the TIS CD. it won't let me copy it but if you know anyone who has the CD it's easy enough to find on there.

As regards Slick50, it has Telflon in it. The basic story as I understood it went something like: Du Pont, the inventors of Teflon, would not recommend it's use in making oil additives because it leaves behind a hard residue which could clog engine oilways. There was a court case over it when Du Pont refused to sell it for oil additive manufacture and afterwards they were forced to it sell to those who wanted to buy it for that use. Others sush as Wynns and STP also used it as a major coinstuent in their products.

BMW rightfully do not advocate the use of additives in any of their car oils. In gearbox and rear axle oils I'm told that the use of additives can break down the anti foaming / anti sheering agents in the oil which causes aeration and thus lowers the levels of lubrication. Gear oils work by the anti sheer agents causing a "wedge" of oil at the point of contact between two metals, once that wedge is broken down gear failure is only a matter of time. There are many more reasons not to use addives in oils, but suffice to say they're are driven by marketing hype, most of which is total bollox
