I would have also assumed DISA from your symptoms. Another to consider would be the vanos unit may need a rebuild. Not a big job on these engines, unlike the S54's. Have a look at some YouTube videos to see if the sound is the same?

Hi Darryl, yes got a couple of quotes. Heasman Differentials quoted £630 to do all the work, but I would need to take the diff to him (take it off the car and refit it myself) he's highly recommended and specializes in BMW diffs. A friend of mine said he got his done at MSL Performance for £600...
