I had a look inside the SAS to make sure, it's free to move infinitely and uses four brushes on some sort of resistor plate. I haven't got a working INPA (do you need an old laptop for that?), but a local BMW specialist is doing it for £36 which seems reasonable.

I'd previously read that this was an issue that could only be remedied with a new/salvage steering column, because the torque sensor is buried deep within the column...

just rebuilding my Coupe's front-end (bought as a Cat-C write-off), and I'm nearly done. However the bumper I have doesn't have any of the brackets for the kidney grilles, so my new grilles won't fit... sigh.
I think the brackets are meant to be an integral part of the original bumper...
thanks, but all sorted now. The only part I needs now (fingers crossed) is a number plate surround. Will be hoping to start it up tomorrow - may need more parts if that goes wrong.
