*update* picked her back up this evening, the following has been completed by the garage: Work done - investigated blue smoke from exhaust and excess oil consumption, suspected engine breather fault, Replaced rocker valve cover, Replaced oil separator in rocker cover, Replaced leaking vacuum...

Further update, garage have rang back and have said that the smoking and oil loss is down to a faulty rocker cover and oil separator (different name for a CCV I believe).

The garage have just been in touch and said that they suspect its the "breather system" and a rocker cover and will get back to me tomorrow with a definitive answer. A faulty rocker cover I can appreciate would explain a oil loss but I don't understand how a faulty one would cause smoke out of...

On paper its been well looked after, its a 57 pate with 11 service stamps in the book mainly from independent garages (some also have the accompnying invoice). Its recently had ABS pump replaced, roof motor refurb, springs etc so I don't think its been unloved - but who knows?? Just hit 84k...

I've asked the garage I've bought it from to check over the exhaust smoke as I've also noticed the digital oil display has gone down a bar (not sure how accurate these things are) - wish it had a proper dipstick! I'll keep you all posted what the garage say tomorrow.

No, unfortunately its been refurbished and refitted back in the passengers side cavity. The receipt also mentioned that it has been sealed, which will presumably help to combat water ingress. I will keep an eye on the drainage channels though - may even just remove the grommet entirely as it...

Yeah that makes sense. I will take a look through the service history to see if there is anything specific on the gear box oil. Luckily I have noticed receipts for ABS pump and roof motor reconditioning in the last 10k.

Hi, how is it better? The manual box is quite firm (almost notchy) on all the Z4's I've had a go of - does the extra weight compensate for this?
