Hi Tom, I have recently just got rid of the same awful noise, It was the intake camshaft sprocket bolts loose and snapped. Sounded identical, I took my car to Redish in Bristol and they sorted it.

Am in Notts! I've had the car a couple of months and didn't use the brakes too hard initially because of the ice/snow. When I used them to brake hard they shuddered quite badly. I inspected them to find very uneven wear and grooving. Took the car back to Sytners BMW, they cleaned them up...
