Mine has just done this, at 30,000 miles, it was the crankshaft pulley, which BMW call a vibration damper that had failed. It is a two part pulley with a rubber coupler inside. The coupler fails and starts slipping, and thats where the smoke comes from. I bought a new pulley and belt and...
