Rear fog light bulbs

Just noticed in the BMW user manual it suggests BMW need to change these bulbs - I'm assuming that's because you need to take the cluster out to do so?

BTW This is on the coupe, but maybe the same on the roadster

No idea why. Undo the cover, bulb our & replacement in. Maybe they think the bulb type is hard to obtain?

No just BMW trying to make dosh..... :!:

Looking earlier in the dusk, it looked like the cluster will need to come out to replace the bulb - there was a bit of bulkhead obscuring the one I want. No biggie though, easy to do (famous last words.....)

I can only assume the reason BMW want to take the car in is because the cluster needs to come out. Did some prodding around at lunch time, on the coupe the plastic trim along the rear panel covers some of the bulbs. Peered underneath and the rear bulkhead doesn't have access holes cut in to do the fogs, so no point removing the trim.

Pop off the inside panel as usual and unbolt those three nuts holding the cluster in.

Removing the weather panel on the top (the three screws) helped for access

The as you'd expect, out it pops.

No idea why that needs a dealer!

Would appear I've been on a wild goose chase. Apparently only the drivers side rear fog lamp works, regardless of pre or post facelift, and that both are fully wired & bulbed. Either that or the dreaded light control module is playing up. Anyone able to confirm the one lamp thing for me?

Be interested in the answer to this, as I have just noticed my passenger side fog is not working... If it's not supposed to then I'd rather know before taking it all apart like CJ has had to. I have no bulb warning lights either - confused :?

Mine will be getting MOT'd this week, so I'll see if it passes. I'm assuming it was exactly as it is now when it passed last year at the main dealer though. If only one light is meant to be on, then it will annoy me. I like tidyness and symmetry!

Have had several 'foreign' cars in the past where only the offside fog light has a lamp in it. Removing the nearside assembly and just putting a suitable bulb in activates the nearside as well - very strange. Or perhaps just a cost cutting exercise as UK law only requires an offised one.

Might just use the excuse to get a screw driver out then, cos it upsets my sense of symmetry and balance :D

Okay, screwdriver now packed away. My 30mins went as follows : both clusters out, both bulbs look fine, wiring looks complete, fogs on... Drivers side only. Swap the bulbs, fogs on.... Drivers side only. Scratch head. Swap bulbs. Same thing. Conclusion - computer setting ? Confused. Anyway, only took 10mins.

Spent the next 20mins getting the rear clusters aligned properly again because they are of course not a flush fit. What a pain in the a$$. Don't even feel I have done everyone a service because I am more confused than when I started... :x

Brake force display (facelift):

The brake lamps light up in two stages, depending on how sharply you apply the brakes.

- Normal braking:
The brake lamps and the center brake lamp light up.

- Sharp braking:
A larger portion of the brake lamps light up.

Ah - so clear now. I knew this, but didn't really. If you know what I mean. Unconfused.com - thanks Dice

Carl - on my two zed survey I'd say there's only one fog light and it's on the drivers side. Either that or we've got three cars between us with the same problem! Tony.
