Updating EPS software

It apparently improves the feel of the Electric Power Steering, ironing out any dead feel or notchyness (made up word?).

I have been trying to get information about this for ages. I've read several posts mentioning the software update, but this advice always seems to come from indy's and never from main dealers. I have asked 3 different BMW main dealers and all had never heard of the update. I know this doesn't mean there isn't one, as the ignorance shown by many main dealers never ceases to amaze me. Is there anyone who has had this done and can provide details please? There must be many of us who would like to get this update carried out, if it actually exists that is!

i know mate had all software updated on his 550, but it took them all day to update all his modules,

also couple of garages refused to do it as if any thing goes wrong whilst doing it it can end up bricking things , non of the independents would cover this if it went wrong

Has anyone on here ever updated their EPS software using SSS Progman or similar program?

I connected up my BCable yesterday to the zed and opened up SSS Progman. I can get to either program/update the EPS or the LWS (steering angle sensor). Which do I do first and what do I need to pay attention to. Any advice from anyone who has done this before would be most welcome.

Haven't done it before but very interested in the result of any EPS update, in regard to any noticeable change. I would suggest the steering angle sensor should be done last of all, but stand to be corrected. I've done this several times now, after various realignments, using DIS, never yet used SSS.

Anyone used NCS Expert to update the EPS software?

Has anyone used SSS Progman or NCS Expert to update the software on any of the other ECU's? What were the results and did you have any problems in doing this?

I have connected up again today using BCables and I can not figure out hoe to use NCS Expert or WinKFP.

I will look to using SSS Progman next weekend to try and update the EPS software.

Anyone used SSS Progman to update any of their ECU's or updated the EPS software by any other means? Any help on this would be appreciated.

I updated it two years ago, but it dont solved the Problem from sticky steering by itself.

There is another Solution to fix it.

How did you update the software, was it using SSS Progman or some other software? Were there any problems in doing this?

In what ways was your steering improved?

I used Ispi Next, but you can also use some programming tools Mike W..kfp.

My column was completely disasembled, by a friend oft me last year in bis repairshop. We investigate the Main Problem of the E85 sticky steering. We improved the Main bearing, the housing and modify the drive. At this time my car drives at all temperatures fine.

Possibly fixed something or optimized algorithm, I guess.
I would have thought by now that if it did much it would be well publicised on this forum at least.
Usually the sticky steering is a mechanical issue.
Lots of people will tell you there was an uprated steering column in the facelift cars, but I had an E86 here last week with sticky steering and the usual tweak of the spacer ring sorted that. Yes, it was the original column as the lower dash hadn't been cut out.

I have to tell you, twisting two bolts are much easier than asking people to start installing INPA, insall KDCAN cable driver (and have to short pin7&8) , adjust INPA setting, and start flashing firmware using winkfp. That's a knowledge learn curve that is why there's not much post about it, without even mentioning and knowing have to adjusting the kwp2000 protocol before flashing EPS, most people would just give up on that final step.

I didn't say it will fix sticky steering as I has also adjusted mine 2006 e85 (which turns out the factory position is already the best one, seems they already fixed it on my 06/06) yet, BMW release upgrade version software for a reason, since you can upgrade to newer version with no holdback or any disadvantage why not flash it?

I've flashed it and now everything is perfect for me, I have prepared some of the parts for hydraulic conversion but honestly I think now the EPS is good enough.

Because in my life I've seen enough things go wrong to stick firmly to 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'.

It's up to you, I'm just sharing the tips for those who wanna upgrade and have no idea how
I appreciate that and it is very commendable. I was initially only asking if the EPS software update actually did anything and even though you’ve done it you say you can only ‘guess’ that maybe it’s done something. So in my mind it seems an unnecessary risk to take to mess about with it in this case.
