Can anyone advise? This afternoon I've tried to unscrew my aerial to see if my super long (35") whippy has the same thread (see pic.), and if so, could be used instead.
Cheers,
Robert.
It's unscrewed so far but then just turns and squeaks without rising any further. The whole aerial turns as well but the torx screw in the base is stationary. Does it just neen a good pull upwards to free it or is there something else that I've missed?Cheers,
Robert.

Sounds like the thread insert may have parted from the plastic case maybe, Obviously you have trashed the value of your genuine BMW whippy, but you may be able to break it for parts or mount it as a smart desk ornament and sure-fire talking pointRoberltd2 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 19, 2021 5:19 pm Can anyone advise? Not sure about it being art prize material, not got the right connections. The likes of Tracy Emin would find a way of putting it to good use no doubt.

Thread insert parting theory not something I'd thought about so thanks for that. It was starting to get dark so before I screwed it back down again, but before I did, I squirted a few drops of dismantling fluid in the gap. Have another go tomorrow I think. The aerial still works anyway.
Thanks.
Thanks.

It was quite a nice day today weather wise so had another go at taking the whippy off. Which it did with a bit of help from a plastic trim lever. It revealed a strange kind of twirly thread which inserts into the aerial base and an M5 metric thread which screws into the mount. Inbetween is a square section piece. Luckily, the intermediate bit unscrewed from the base without breaking. I've cleaned up, greased the threads and put everything back together as was for now before deciding on the next move.....
Exciting times! (if only)

A naked whippy base You could be arrested for showing that. Get some clothes on it at once.

It's official, the Whippy is now a classic with our first Whippy restoration postRoberltd2 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 19, 2021 12:40 am It was quite a nice day today weather wise so had another go at taking the whippy off. A chap told me yesterday that I'd probably get £1k more for my Z4 if I sold it with the whippy on. (Not that I'm selling).

That's because the E85/86 and now E89 becoming "modern classics". As with any classic car, the real collectors like them to be as standard as possible.
My "classic" definition is taken purely from eBay marketing. According to most sellers on the 'bay, there are a few:
Cars between 5-10 years old are 'modern classics'
Cars between 10-20 years old are 'investments'
Anything over 20 years old is a bona fide 'classic'
Anything that is a pile of crap is a 'barn find'
No such thing as just an old car anymore
All good things come to those who wait. I'm really impatient which explains a lot.
F31 320i. Good car.
E89 20i Now fully dried
Z3 'free litre'. Project and a half. Complicated!
Mazda3 sold
Tatty old R56 Mini Cooper. Money pit!

Need to add a whippy to my daily shed, Mazda2 Capela, that's 17 years old now, then flog it for a small fortune.Pondrew wrote: ↑Mon Dec 27, 2021 9:07 pmThat's because the E85/86 and now E89 becoming "modern classics". Or I could just keep driving it , as it's just so fecking reliable and fun to chuck around corners.
