Finally finished my DRL refurbish this weekend (long weekend - yaay). Changed the chrome inners to semi-gloss black like the OEM's, and fitted back on the car today.
Using the Carly app I set the parameters how I thought they should be:
Daytime Running Lights 1/2 - active
Daytime Running Lights 2/2 - active
Side Markers as DRL - active (I think it's side markers - it's side something anyway).

And lo and behold - the bloody headlights go on and stay on. Which is what the OP was having as well I think.
After trying various combinations (I KNEW I had them working without headlights before) I tuned off DRL 1/2 and 2/2 but left 'side markers as DRL's' on and now they work perfectly.
So:
Daytime Running Lights 1/2 - Not Active
Daytime Running Lights 2/2 - Not Active
Side markers as DRL - Active

This gives you:
Halos on when ignition on and lights at position '0' (off). No headlights come on.
When headlights are turned on (dipped beam or high beam) the halos switch off (which is required by law here).
Perfect!

I may have to have a play with setting this up in NCS Expert. I'll be fitting a set of these once the HID kit arrives for them but will wire the halos and 'eyebrows' to a relay so that with IGN off the eyebrows are active (parking light) and with IGN on the halos are active.

eBay DRL relay. Loads for £5-£10
I have one that puts drl's on with ignition and has a trigger wire on the sidelights which switches them off for nighttime.
You can get cool functions that switch off when indicators on, flash with horn, etc.

without reading the whole thread .... this may have been covered but why not fit the lights from the facelift / z4m into the earlier cars.
They really are fantastic lights, some of the best I've had actually.

I'm not sure I will be running the halos as DRLs due to their brightness but will have to wait and see. I don't need anything other than simple on/off if I do use them though and would prefer the car does it. The relay is a DPDT and would simply switch between halos and eyebrows because I think the draw will be less and the eyebrow would be a more effective parking light. I think the Halos draw somewhere between 5-7W in use whereas my W5W LED sidelights draw 1W; I happily use the parking lights overnight.
Wiring will be reversible at the LCM loom with connectors added and feeds to the relay terminals, rather than a straight splice. The eyebrows will run off the existing loom and sidelight feed and the halos from the relay NO terminals. I have 10 in a box so there may be some kits made as I won't hold that many spare!

Cost / style? I think these don't look massively aftermarket and freshen up the front which is why I have a set.

Costs... Isn't a single unit like 1600 from BMW ? Crazy price compared to after market.

@ tomazwhite

Found this old thread and I am hopeful.
This is a new car to me that came with sonar headlights. I have a solid near side indicator on with side lights and an error on the dash.

What resistors did your garage fit and how?

Far easier to just code out the checks.

But there will potentially be a light issue causing it, unless someone has fitted resistors and they have failed. One reason not to bother with them.

I can’t say for sure but I think the previous owner binned his lights (failed a few mot’s on lights with the last one having incorrect aims on both) and replaced them with second hand ones. The cars probably had the error light since fitting these.
