Where's My Dipstick?

Post by sharpyboy » Mon Oct 10, 2016 5:33 pm

Ok went to do some fluid level checks like a responsible owner and I cannot find the oil dipstick. My engine is the N52 2.5i in a 2006 facelift version. I know some of the more up to date versions of the zed check there oil level via the idrive but I don't have anything like that. I understand I would probably get a low level oil warning light but how would you check the level after an oil change?

Sorry about the quality of the photo its an iPhone in low light

You don't have one. It's a sensor that will tell you when you need to add a litre of oil. You can find out from the dash on start up what the level is, but I'm afraid I can't remember how...

It's a good idea to have a litre in the boot

Hi, once the engine has warmed up press the r/h button in front of the speedo & an electronic dipstick appears in the display with an approximation of the oil level.
If you've added 6.5 litres from empty it should be fine

Doesnt look like your car has the dipstick, my 2005 pre facelift has one. A dreadful innovation doing away with the dipstick and for enthusiats there is nothing more satisfying then checking the oil level regularly.

Makes an oil change more difficult as you can't shove the tube down the dipstick hole..... :D

Would feel totally unatural for me relying on some electronic level sensor oil voodoo magic trickery.
I'd always have the feeling of whether it was telling me the truth or not. Like some ex girlfriends I can think of.

Read up on 'how to' sharpy, as you need to have run the engine for a time before you get a proper readout with the facelift N52 engine.

It's strange how you can get used to the electronic version though. When I first got my 3.0si I bemoaned the fact it didn't have a dip stick (bar the one in the driving seat) and then 2 and a bit years later, when I got the M, I thought damn, I've got to lift the bonnet to check the oil rather than just pressing a button

Yes - get yourself an electronic version of the handbook (available on ebay for a coupe of pounds) - quite cheap and you can keep it on your phone for easy access info  (When I lost mine through changing phones, the guy sent me another file of it free! )
Now Porsche flat 6 experience, 986S & 981S.
2006 Z4MR Imola Red/Imola Red, 2008 3.0si Sport Stratus Grey/Piano black, 2006 2.0I Sport Silver Grey Facelift. MX5, TVR Chimaera, many motorbikes.

Paul if you don't check the electronic reading regularly, or even forget to ( ) will the car throw up an oil waring light on the dash if it gets low?
