Warning Lights - DSC Sensor/Alternator

Post by flimper » Wed Jun 11, 2014 4:38 pm

Got these warning lights on a drive today

Also, when I take my foot off the accelerator, the power seems to stay on for longer than normal. Any ideas?

Looks like ABS....would buy a OBD reader of ebay and get the codes read to be exact.

I've got these currently too. It could be a variety of things from sensors to abs pump etc etc. I've bought some software so will try to read the problem but as MOT is looming will probably let my garage deal with it.

Thinking about it I should have checked tyre pressure first. I'll check tomorrow.

The lower one in the centre was TPMS on my X3 & didn,t return once reset , , , triggered by my checking & changing all tyre pressures before a long journey

I always get a small when a warning light comes on, changing my underwear normally solves this!

Hope this helps :)

Just been down to the car to get something and thought I'd fire it up to see if the lights came on, and nothing.

Then thought I'd give it a 15 minute spirited drive to provoke them into coming on, and nothing.

Confused now :?

Booked in with TWG for a quick look tomorrow to see if it's anything obvious.

DSC Sensor Issue - FIXED

Post by flimper » Fri Jun 13, 2014 11:32 am

This was what the fault reader came back with...

Will tells me that the car can't sense when it is tipping from side to side (yaw sensor issue?) and that the car needs a new DSC sensor (is that the same as the yaw sensor?) at a cost of around £300. It is possible it is a loose or broken wire but he won't know that until he's taken a look, apparently it is situated under the driver's seat somewhere. He also checked for a damp carpet (asked me if the car had been valeted) as that can cause problems as well apparently.

Odd symptoms connected to this are that it feels like you are driving with the sport button on all the time, but with normal power (keeps the power on for a short time after you take foot off accelerator). Strange thing, is that the sport button no longer works, or the hill climb facility.

is will completely in the know as....

for me "rotational" rate suggest something thats rotating or am i being thick? what on gods earth does it have to do with something sited under the seat... flimper, your an intelligent guy and sometimes, you have to research OUTside of dealers/ specialists, i may be totally wrong but the diagnosis actually sounds silly...

i would GUESS this is something to do with a failing abs sensor for the tyre pressure monitor system that calculates a low tyre but its rotational rate. But... i may be completely wrong and will may be right, but usually in life, if somethings sounds odd, it usually is.

I like to think I'm an intelligent guy, but when it comes to cars and fixing them I am a complete thicky

I would have thought issues with the tyre pressure or ABS sensors would throw up 'TPMS' or 'ABS' as part of the code ? The DSC system should monitor movement of the car in all three planes of motion - pitch, roll & yaw. Depends how they classify 'rotation' because yaw is effectively rotation of the car left or right around a level plane when travelling in a straight line, I think. If it is, then yaw is also what happens in under & oversteer situations, for example when you experience oversteer on a left hand turn the car is rotating left on a flat plane faster than the steering input should be making it turn, in understeer situations on the same turn it is rotating left slower than it should be, which means it is effectively rotating right, relative to the intended direction of travel.

Of course I'm deducing this from memories of flight training that are decades old in terms of both learning and actual experience, so I could be completely wrong too :P

DSC Sensor Issue - FIXED

Post by flimper » Thu Jun 26, 2014 1:45 pm

Just picked up the car after having the DSC sensor replaced. Turns out it had failed due to water getting into the car through the door membrane (when I had a new door years ago they had obviously not fitted it properly as you can see with the duc tape in one of the pictures  ) £550 was a bit more than I was expecting but suppose it could also have been a lot higher if it wasn't the sensor so not too distressed. Took it for a blast after, and it's great to have the M back in rude health :driving:

8 years on and seems like I may need another DSC sensor, Warning lights on & off and fault codes suggest DSC sensor and high voltage issues :headbang:
