e86 rear shock top mounts

My mechanic said these are on the way out and apparently it's a very common fault on the Zs.
I was doing some digging on the forums and found the OEM ones will just do this again.
Can anyone suggest a brand that does not suffer from the same?

really like the RE engineering reinforced units, billet and reversed so future shock removal is literally a 10 min job...

Would these be the ones you are referring to:

yes , awesome items.... and rebuildable too.... you'll never need another RSM :-) Swapping them out initially is a pain in the ass, really is... once in... lifes a breeze.

Now, I do little mileage with my Z so if I do go OEM, how long are they expected to last?

oem should last a very long time, their life is significantly reduced with uprated suspension / coilovers if your all stock, dont worry and be happy with your oem pieces!!

I'm replacing mine this weekend with all new parts, Meyle HD uprated mounts and Z3 reinforcement plates. I'd expect this to then outlast the car

Will do. The car has 52k miles and I assume they've never been changed so a new pair will last as long as I will have the car.

Quick question.. If you change the top mounts, does it put all the alignment out?

An easy cheap job could end up. Ousting a few £££

Yeah, if you start stripping bits off to swap parts you'll benefit from an alignment.

I fitted new RSM's today, with the Z3 reinforcement plates. To be fair, if the old ones were original they looked fine for their age and mileage!

Yeah I need to change the front bushes too, the alignment can't even happen until they are sorted but might postpone it until the RSMs are done too.
Do the z3 plates go in the boot or inside the wheel arch?
T2FFN where did you get the Z3 reinforced ones? Is there a RSM E86 DIY somewhere?

BMW directly: The Z3 reinforcement plates are £24.67 for the pair. The part number for them is 51.71.8.413.359.

Cool. Thanks.
So you install the z4 rsm kit as usual but just add the z3 plates inside the wheel arch? Nothing extra required?

Yes, but you add the Z3 plate inside the boot, on the inside if the wheel arch mounting point. The purpose being instead of just the two bolts going through sheet metal, they go through the Z3 plate, then sheet metal, then RSM, so its less likely to have any issue with the RSM pulling tearing the mounting holes should you drive like a lunatic.

Part 9, the paper gasket goes on the wheel arch side, the reinforcement plate goes inside the boot.

You can just see the gold colour plate in this pic:

heres how mine look with RE units.... They also ahve the top reinforcing ring too and the bottom section is billet, the orientation of the washeres means its impossible for it to punch through like the stock ones, unless the complete tower fails :-)

in terms of future rear shock removal on a roadster imo these are worth every single penny.... 5 quid completely rebuilds them too :-)

Fully agree, if fitting adjustable shocks that are adjusted off the car, or coilovers then these would make sense. If you're fitting fixed dampers i dont see the point, as its a once every 5yr job to remove them, or in my cars case, 9yrs.
