Possibly incorrectly folding? Think there are threads on here with a little searching.
+1 Here's one recent thread I found quickly, there's many more. http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=49637&p=721445

Oh dear, happened to me. next thing you know bam... 1k fix

Nah, £350 for the bits if you are competent with a spanner (which I am not) use the guide at shipkiller.com ; or £650 / £700 if you pay someone to do it. I admit it's still a pricey fix, but not a grand.

To the OP - is the hood struggling during the rest of the cycle at all ? If not then it could be the motor for the latches at the front... Though I have never heard of those going :?

I think Stu86 may be right, it could be a folding issue. Mine doesn't latch if the folding is not right the bulletin pic is not good. Below are pics of mine right and wrong.
Should NOT fold like this:

Should fold like this:

If it's folded correctly the roof goes all the way down and latches properly.

 Thank you! A brilliant example of a picture (or two) being worth a thousand words -- or much more than a lousy SIB line drawing.

Perhaps we are talking cross purposes. I read "closing" as putting the roof up, not lowering it. Think the OP needs to clarify.

Yep, I would say "closing" is raising it but the OP mentioned having to click it into place and that's what I had to do when opening until I realised it wasn't folding properly. As you say, needs clarification :?

I am worried now - I don't think I have the anti-trap guides on mine... Did they remove them on the facelift ? Need to go check......

Ah! Good catch! Appears to be the case. Not on mine either. Doesn't appear to be an issue as long as the fabric folds correctly. If not, OUCH! - hello new hood!

@srhutch - I took "closing" that way too, had to reread twice before deciding OP was referring to the other direction.

Phew - definitely not got them, glad I am not the only one. All folds fine so I can cross that worry off my list :D

Which bit don't you have on the facelift?

Hmmm. Hard to describe and I have no editing software to hand, but the wavy bit of plastic you can see sitting just under the uppermost bit of the rubber window seal, that looks like it connects the two vertical hinges. Does that help ?

This bit?

Nope - halfway down the right hand side of your oval you catch the corner of the plastic bit (anti-trap mechanism) though. See it now ?
