Nail in tyre

Post by Z4 Beemer » Sat Nov 19, 2011 12:46 pm

Argh.....

Discovered a large nail in one of my rear tyres this morning. Pulled it out a bit and air is definitely leaking out, so pushed it back in.

Popped into Kwik Fit and they quoted £306 for a new tyre and fitting.

Bridgestone Potenza RE050A 19" 255/30

How does this sound? Is dealer likely to be cheaper?

Is it not repairable?

Had a quick look around the Internet and this looks the cheapest. However what are the condition of the other tyres - may be an opportunity to change to Non RFTs.

Jeepers £306.00 for one tyre, oh but they are really nice.....

Sorry that's unfortunate, if you replace to non-rft's then the cost is going to be considerably more than £306.00 as you will have to replace all of them, Conti's sport contact 5's are £255.00 each

Find an ATS and they will repair it....just make sure they are careful when they take the tyre off...I had mine repaired 3 weeks ago and still as good as ever, not letting anything out...

Thanks for all the replies guys.

The nail is right at the edge of the surface that is in contact with the ground, near the 'shoulder' - it stands out a mile when you look at the car.

I had thought about the possibility of getting rid of the RFT's, but there's probably about 5mm left in all of them, i.e. they are all in pretty good condition. I think I'll go ahead and get it done this afternoon.

Thats a bummer because the shoulder is one area they don't like repairing because on a runflat its where most of the stress is. :(

For safetys sake, I'd go for new but might be worth getting advice from a GOOD tyre dealer.....difficult I know :o

Blackcircle quoted 18" Bridgestone RFT (rear) for £280, so the price for your 19" was not bad. Some dealers will do price match if they want your business.

Price difference between Bridgestone and Michelin is closer now, only £8 per tyre.

I have a rear RE050 with a plug about 1/2" from the inside edge and I still have lots of tread so I plan to run it a while before ditching the run flats. I check the repaired tire pressure weekly and it is not leaking. If it decides to start leaking the car will let me know and since it's a run flat I can drive to the nearest air pump to top it up without harm. May as well get some more use out of them if you can.
Over here in Canada, switching to a set of 4 Non-RFT will cost about the same as buying 2 RFT and I understand the ride and noise level will improve....I plan to do that next spring

Just had the same - except nail was dead centre. To be safe I replaced the tyre.

I was lucky to have a tyre insurance provided by BMW. You just pay any excess over £300. I think that they allow 5 tyres in 3 years (or somthing like that) and also they will clean up the rims every so often. Downside is you have to use BMW dealership for the tyre. I ended up paying about £150 inc VAT for the 19" RF tyre fully fitted. BMW recommended the Bridgestone. They said it was the best in their experience. (and most expensive)

Yet another reason to get rid of RFT's.
If the nail is on (or very close to) the "shoulder" or in the sidewall the only option is to replace the tyre. If the nail is on the wearing surface, just have it plugged. Some of our wheel and tyre retailers down here absolutely refuse to repair RFT's "because it would be dangerous" - obviously hoping to sell you a new tyre. Only my E60 came with RFT's and they are long gone. 8)

Should have repaired it for £10. Nothing wrong with a good repair if it's done properly.

+1 ...particularly when you have the added safety of a run flat. If the repair leaks it will likely be slow and detected by the Tire Pressure monitoring system. If it somehow goes flat quickly you can drive 100 miles looking for a new one...no worries

Well, new tyre fitted for £306.75, which apparently included a discount, but they even charged me £1.50 for inflating with Nitrogen!

I asked them to check for any hairline cracks on the wheels while it was up on the ramps but thankfully all wheels are good. I was also worried they might scuff the alloy taking the old tyre off / putting the new tyre on, but all was fine.
