New to E85s...and airbag lights!

Post by flimsy » Wed Apr 16, 2025 5:54 pm

Hello Zed folk,
First of all, thank you for running and being a part of this forum. Even before signing up and belatedly donating, I've been digging away here for useful information. Your help has been invaluable!

I bought a 2004 3.0i M54 manual late last year with a very short MOT and a handful of problems. Seller was a really nice guy and the car is in good condition for its 145,000 miles. Had it off the road for a couple of months while I sorted the issues, took it for an MOT at the start of a sunny week in February, it passed - joy! No advisories! Can't believe it!

Took it out the next day for its first proper drive and... that's when the electrical problems started.
No wipers, indicators on dash were gone etc etc. I won't bore you with the details, the problems were caused by a loose connection under the dash. Someone has clearly been messing about there and their work wasn't the height of craftsmanship.

Solved that but now I have a persistent airbag light. I've checked the wiring, looks ok (not an expert), the central airbag module also looks good and was recently replaced. My guess is that nothing is really wrong but I can't communicate with the car's modules in order to clear the code. I get an IFH-0009 error with most of them. Seems like the issue could be the cable, INPA install, windows version, some dicey wiring or a bad module on the car.

Anyway, I think I'd rather turn it over to a friendly expert at this point as going through all of those options sounds like a pain and I want to enjoy the car.
So if anyone knows such a person, I'd be very grateful. I'm based in the east midlands and can travel an hour or two.

On the bright side, it's running great, the roof works and it's got a straight six and sport seats. I can live with a dash light for a while. Happy motoring! :driving:

Welcome aboard.
For the East Midlands you have bigwinn, near Lincoln or me over in Norfolk, just down the road from Norwich.
Either of us should be able to help you.
Without wanting to sound patronising, if you came to me I think I would start right back at the beginning and fault diagnose agasin, just so I know in my own head where we're at.
It would be useful if you could ascertain the part numbers of the centre airbag module (SIM85) and the satelites (SBSL & SBSR) before you travel.

Always happy to help if I can.

If the forum helped you, why not help the forum back. Thats the Z4 way!

Thanks guys! Can't wait to have an error-free dash. And a working airbag would be nice too...
I'm sure some fun new error will be along soon after to give me something to do.

Found some time to pull the units. I checked the connections and they're clean and free of corrosion. The passenger side has been repaired and rewired in the past. The driver's unit has 'faulty' written on the back

Driver's side unit
65. 77 - 694158 01
SBSR 220 4353 - 20 0348
BMW - Nr: *S169451580K*
Serien - Nr: *803B334MA0868I*

Passenger side unit - E64 written in tippex, guess it's from a junked 6 Series.
65. 77 - 6945157 01
SBSL 220 4353 - 19 0404
BMW - Nr: *S16945701H*
Serien - Nr: *04B020MA1027R*

Central unit
65. 77 - 6962767 01
SIM 220 4382 - 77 0522
BMW - Nr: *316962767010*
Serien - Nr: *05B154MA0501W*

Hopefully that's a starting point. Thanks.

I'm guessing the drivers one is missing a digit? 6945158

Good news is I have all three of those covered if you are able to wend your way to Norfolk at some point?

To conclude this one:
flimsy came to me this afternoon. After a minute or two I was able to agree with his original prognosis that none of the airbag modules were being seen by the OBD reader.
The two satellites feed back through the centre (SIM85), so quickly slaved in another one and sure enough we could see all three.
Left (SBSL) was fine, right (SBSR) had an error.
Step one was code in the SIM85. That worked.
Then replaced the faulty SBSR and coded that in.
Airbag light out and another happy customer.

Funniest bit was saying 'Oh yes the SBSR is faulty too', then pulling it out and finding 'Faulty' written in pink marker pen underneath it
