Remote engine start?

Hi

I was thinking, back when we had snow and frost. Does the G29 have a remote engine start feature, allowing you to warm the car? It would be useful to defrost the windows, and if the door windows are frozen they wouldn't drop to allow the door to open.

Irrelevant for me because I have my old 5 series, which I use throughout the winter months, but it crossed my mind 🤷🏼🤷🏼🤷🏼

Not available from BMW as they don't know whether you are on a public highway or not..

Is Remote Engine Start available in the UK?
Due to local (UK) legislation this function is not available / offered within the UK. Currently the Road Traffic Act does not allow for the vehicle’s engine to be activated on a public highway without the driver present.

Yer. I kinda got that from looking into it this afternoon. I don't think I'd ever use the feature.....I'm just curious about 'things' 🤣🤣
I do believe though that remote engine start is electronically devoted running to the ventilation alone, and the gear box etc etc is fully disabled. Even when you get in the car, with the key on you and if the engine was still running on its 15 min cycle, you still have to go through the pressing the start button procedure to effectively wake the car properly.
I did think having the feature might have been handy to defrost and enable easier entry to the car though 🤷🏼

Totally agreed with the above point of UK legislation. Won’t go into a previous life but you cannot leave a car running without someone being behind the wheel or you could face prosecution. That said, we do have a Lexus where this function on a snowy / frosty morning is fantastic, that being the car is on private land and fully locked, it also switches off after 15 or so minutes.

Have to say a very good function and would really support any car that like the Z4 that drops its windows a tad before opening the doors. Especially on a cold -5 Scottish winter morning :headbang:

Doesn't the precondition ventilation do that? You can activate it through the my bmw app

I’ve tried that, works fine from the app but never left it long enough to see if the engine kicks in. Cars sits in the garage and I’ve only had it a few months so still learning things about it.

Engine won't kick in with plan ventilation, it is not pre conditioning, it simply draws in ambient air, it does not "cool" the car.

Thanks for the heads up.

The Lexus we have when not garaged does kick in with the heating on, great on the cold mornings. What is the purpose of the ventilation, is this just to cool the car on a hot day ? If so I get that with leather seats but if not what is the purpose. As I say still picking up on things with the car. My first Z4 and BMW.

My Volvo has remote engine start through the app. You can set how long the engine runs for.

I wonder why Volvo and Lexus haven't disabled the feature of BMW have.
