E89 Rust

Post by golfingmad26 » Sun Mar 24, 2024 12:04 pm

Hi, my E89 has just passed its MOT but a rust issue has been found but i can't identify what the part is that needs replacing, is there anyone on here that knows what the part is. The only way i can show the problem is from the video link provided by the company - https://video.citnow.com/vtJ3GpV-8sH

If anyone is OK to take a look and tell me what they think that part is then id be very thankful for your help.

That's your subframe. If you replace it, also do your oil pan gasket. Looks like a big job.

Time for an estimate from 2 reputable garages to replace the sub-frame.

As for the leaking gearbox, it can wait.

The oil leak is from the oil pump housing, that's already been identified thankfully. My mechanic is looking to see how much work it is going to entail to do the sub-frame, hes currently restoring a Z3 also so he's BMW comfortable just hasn't done the sub-frame previously

Yes. I think on further investigation that the Rusty part is
BMW V-brace, front subframe, right. Body - BMW Parts which is an aluminium part fitted along side a Steel part which is a problem kn it's own right

Crikey, has it been used as a submarine.
Haven't seen that sort of rust since i had TR7 in 80's.

Most cars would look rusty on suspension, glad i kept on top of painting and oiling my cars parts last 11 years.

I'm surprised at how its gone in a year, from nothing to it being that bad but once Alluminium starts going apparently it just goes but as the video shows it has just started crumbling. My car has only done 600 miles this tear so maybe a contributing factor and not been dried out enough ????

That is several years to go like that.
Has the car lived near the sea or where they salt regular.
