Thought this was and would be an unused gimmick.

Tried it today after driving around 50m up a winding narrow worksite access.

Put car in reverse, pushed a button and apart from the accelerator, let the car do the whole manoeuvre back out.

I was actually quite impressed!

The worry of the impending crunch noise has stopped me even trying this

I spend much time reversing down single track Cornish lanes, for horses and the like. Does it work with Hedge rows would be my first question?

So far as I can tell it doesnt matter whats either side.

The car simply memorises the last 50m driven and reverses back on exactly that track.

Have it on my 330e daily works well especially for turning out of a tight parking space or off a drive.

It’s not a bad little feature. On rare occasions I use it, it works flawlessly retracing the last 50m.

Don’t you use it just now, it’ll just reverse you back to the dealers

I think it's a perfect option, I always use it to drive the car out of the garage. If I didn't hit anything driving in, I won't hit anything driving out.

Assuming no-one has parked another car, abandoned a bike, moved the bins, let the dog out.............................

When you select reverse gear and your rear camera appears on the main screen, there is a little checkbox appears 'reverse assist' on the RHS menu. Just select it.
The car talks you through the process, but its basically 'I will steer, you control the accelerator and brakes'.
All the usual sensors are in operation so if something has blocked the path since you drove in, you will be warned - but obviously you will be using your normal vision to check your pathway in any event.
