Bogging power issue M54 3.0i

Post by Wookster78 » Sun Feb 11, 2024 3:05 pm

I can get to move freely but even with pliars it’s not coming out, should it pop up as it just sits flush until you turn the solenoid upside down and it then drops freely?

Ah no, not in the solenoid! In the housing. The solenoid operates it.

Item 4 on the picture above.

You do have the valve there between the spring and the solenoid?

Let's hope this is the problem then.

Well 50% there can’t get the bottom one off without the radiator coming out, just no clearance so will have to save that for another day when I have some more coolant, pain it’s so tight in there

See if there's any improvement with just that one done.

Fingers crossed just took her for a run and back to full power with no bogging, if the top one was gunky then the bottom must not be far behind so have to see if I can find a super deep socket to get it off.

I removed my intake solenoid with the vanos off the car during the vanos overhaul but I couldn't remove the exhaust one it was really tight, I left it because i wasn't getting any issues and the intake one was really clean however I did research afterwards removing it from the vanos whilst on the car to check it.

You need a 32 mm socket that is at least 3.5 inches deep quite hard to find or a 32mm crows foot spanner can also remove it but I can't confirm that.

I did find this on ebay tho but can't find a picture of it.

Thanks had a look on eBay and found an extra deep 32mm socket that’s 120mm total length and inner approx 70mm so hopefully do the job and don’t have the take the whole thing apart

If that really has cured the problem it was worth a few hours of work.
Not exactly what I thought the problem may be, but it got you there.

Could always be an intermittent fault gremlin as it’s not a daily driver but only time will tell
