Brake tight part help

Post by OptimusMiles » Wed Jan 24, 2024 8:08 am

Hello all.
I’m after a little help identifying a part I need to fix one of my tail light bulbs.
I’ll do my best to describe it.
When I bought the car the previous owner told me there was a bulb out but it isn’t just the bulb.
So, I have a bulb, I have the plastic socket that the bulb fits into. The problem is there is nowhere to fit the bulb into the car. There are just a couple of wires where the mystery part used to be.
Hopefully this makes sense to someone?

Also, will it be an instant mot fail if one of the two tail light bulbs is out?

Thanks

Hm

Looks like someone has been up to mischief in there

Is that an e89 z? I’ve not had much experience of lights on those but assuming they are the same principle as the e85, the light base is a complete unit which the loom plugs into, and the bulb/bulb holders are part of the circuit

I’d be trying to trace the wiring to see where it goes

If you plug the bulb holder in with a bulb does it not work?

Those wires should attach to a plastic holder that then carries the plastic bulb carrier that holds the bulb..

Usual reason for this is people wrestling to get the rear light cluster out to cure leaks or replacement.

If you buy a second user / damaged tail light you can cannibalise it to get another part..yiu can’t but the pieces separately..

Thanks for the replies.
Looks like I need to buy a whole new light cluster then.
Look to be about £200 on eBay.

So this little plastic ring is what I’m missing.
This is the other light cluster.

I reckon you should try a wanted ad first, on here, fb etc.
I stand to be corrected but I don't think that part is handed, so all you really need is an old knackered light unit as long as that part is complete and can be swapped onto yours.

Correct cannibalise an old light cluster…

If you are struggling I can sell you that part..maybe..I had a similar issue and bought a spare…for reasonable rates

Here are the two black light connectors that are attached to the wiring harness..

£20 plus p+p..

I’d cut the pigtails to as much length as possible.

Obviously you need to splice the pigtails into the existing harness on the light cluster..

Best to remove the light before doing that.

Specify which colour leads you prefer.

Should be easy enough with a soldering iron and a little shrink wrap..
