Here we go again...recommendations/ thoughts?

Post by Pondrew » Fri Nov 24, 2023 11:47 pm

I have (almost) settled on a Passat or a Mondeo. Still both are bloody expensive for what they are, but that is the world we seem to live in.

I have always had a soft spot for a 'Mondy'. Had 3 in the past, as well as 2 Sierras before them.
All good things come to those who wait. I'm really impatient which explains a lot.

I'd rather have an Octavia than a Passat.

You could probably get an Insignia way cheaper than an equivalent Mondeo as Vauxhalls don't seem to be nearly as popular as Fords, but there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with them as a daily.

But tomorrow you'll probably want a Jaguar XF!
Coupes because stunning!

A Passat does look a lot nicer than the Skoda but then the Skoda is cheaper. And great gearboxes to go with it (manual obviously )

You would think so, but not the case anymore.
There is a strange situation (that I have never seen before) in the 'car market', where almost any car of the same age and mileage is virtually the same money, no matter what it is. The only ones I have found that are significantly more expensive are the equivalent Audreys, Mercs and BMs.

I have looked at everything, as the petrol, manual estate car is quite a rare beast. Renault Meganes are as pricey as the others, so are Insignias, and even Astras.

All are extremely expensive. £14-18k for a five to seven year old 'average' family estate car is a lot IMO.

The Mondeo that has caught my eye is a 2017 Titanium spec 1.5 ecoboost with 30k miles. £14k! :o

I'd do a little research on the 1.5 ecoboost engine first, I'm sure there are issues with them

I have done. Coolant leaks and overheating problems, but nowhere near as common as the 1 litre.
As discussed elsewhere, if I researched every engine available I wouldn't buy anything!

I’m going to do what you do, which is set your criteria and then ignore them completely and buy something totally random :o

It's a good, but usually expensive, way of doing things. Sort of 'car lottery'. :D

I am now looking at Audi A4 avant TFSIs. Turns out they did a manual gearbox until very recently.
Budget has had to increase by £10k, but I am now going with the attitude that the more I spend the less inheritance tax my wife/ daughter will have to pay the bstard Government!

I call that 'man maths plus'.

Your wife is Malteser so she will just have to move back to avoid that part.

British citizen with no dual nationality.
I think she would rather pay than have to live there again.

No luck then

I am going through what you are going through with your mum, so all I can say is that I am grateful that they didn't live in the UK and I only pay the NL tax, which is a tiny fraction of what it is here.
