Rear light clusters on a Z4 E89

Post by Welsh Terrier » Mon Sep 04, 2023 10:41 am

Hi Guys,
I would like your thoughts on the following please.
I have just purchased a very low mileage z4. It came with a 3 month warranty. One of the rear light clusters has left in water. The warranty company will not cover it though to be fair the Garage said they will replace. I notice this weekend after washing the car the other rear light cluster has left in moisture. We have had two hot days and this has burnt off most of the moisture.

I guess my question is this- has the second cluster failed as well? I paid top money for the car due to its condition having done only 6,500 miles at the time I bought it.

Thanks for your help 👍🏆

Water leaks in E89 rear light’s especially earlier ones is very common..once water is is it’s pretty inevitable that the unit will fail unless the water is removed quickly and the cause of the leak addressed.

Refitting and sealing them if the seals have failed is quite tricky..

Two new rear lights are now over £600 so I’m not sure how much enthusiasm your garage may have..
We choose to go to on with this endeavour at this time and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard…
A very modified Atacama Yellow 35is

Remove, dry and reseal with evostick glue. I have no problem last several years.

Even new will leak if you don't seal them.
Just bad design and materials.

When I took off the light on my previous 2010 z4, I thought there was just a tiny bit of water ingress.

Tipped it up & shocked to see almost a cup full of water come out - so likely more in there than you think!

Hard to buy new ones at the moment too :(
