Windscreen replacement - any recommendations?

Hi folks,

Just been to Sommerfest today and getting home saw that the chip at the bottom of my screen has turned into a crack… Knackers…

The screen is original and was on the long term ‘to do’ list as it’s peppered with marks from 15 years use, but now has been bumped up. Anyone have any recommendations for changing out please?

Sorry to see that Mike, but it will be quite satisfying with a new one. I replaced mine a few years back as like you it was covered in tiny marks.
I don't have windscreen cover with my insurance so I paid bmw to do it. I was glad I did as they made a right mess of the first attempt so it was done again, with another screen I think. All good second time but they managed to break quite a few of the fixings of the windscreen cowel so that was replaced at quite some cost to them iirc.

after you get a new screen, cover it in properly.... No more rock chips, no more pitting over the years, peel off the film and replaced every 3/4 or so years the screen underneath will remain AS NEW , most of all you wont get the potential damages that tom mentions above. It WILL degrade over the years but thats because its doing its job being sacrificial keeping the screen perfect underneath, in product testing we fired Ball bearings at it and it still didn't chip.

At the time of making this video the o.e screen was on back order but plenty of pattern pieces were available @autoglass. They may be available now however.

My insurance company did mine just a few weeks ago for £95. Can't recall who they used but it wasn't autoglass. The chap did a great job and used a Pilkington screen who were one of the OEM manufacturers.

Wish I had thought/known about this, even the new screen 5 years or so later isn't looking that amazing. I didn't really know about it, are there any downsides for visibility?

nothing at all - but solid experience with PPF / films is essential for a clean install ( its not for your once in a while PPF installers), lots of stretch is needed to get it round the curve of a screen, the solutions needed to install MUST be nail on perfect otherwise the glue lines will be seen.... my shop one of the highest install of these in the UK and started doing the product test very early, weve now got a fairly large customer base for these from classics, EVs, racing companies, limo companies and track day companies. one of our best sellers for sure.
