Water hose O Ring?

Post by colb » Sun May 28, 2023 9:11 pm

Found a weeping water hose connection at the bottom of the coolant expansion tank
https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showpa ... Id=17_0249

Question is Is there a O ring inside the fitting at the end of the hose and if there is what size is it?
O ring not shown in OEM parts listing, is it included in a new hose?

Would like to just put a new O ring in as the pipe itself still in good order. I do have a set of assorted O Rings but holding off taking it apart to see if I have one that fits, would rather have bought a replacement O ring from BMW if they had listed it.

Water hose O Ring?

Post by patriot66 » Sun May 28, 2023 9:50 pm

Hi Colb. I fitted a new radiator last year and from memory and this photo there were no o-rings fitted on the bottom or top hose connection, so must be inside the hose fitting itself. No idea what size though :?

Water hose O Ring?

Post by Z4Mariner » Sun May 28, 2023 10:03 pm

Hi Colb, yes, there is an O-ring in the hose fitting, and I don't THINK it is sold separately by BMW. I couldn't find a listing on RealOEM or with two reliable US vendors.

I wish you well . . . O-rings should be so simple, but the combinations of size and material can be really frustrating.

Water hose O Ring?

Post by smorris_12 » Mon May 29, 2023 8:20 am

I bought a box of assorted O-rings on a whim thinking it would come in useful for the many and varied things I do.

Nope.

Out of a couple of dozen attempts to find a replacement in this box, I think I've managed one. The only other instant win was when I was machining something that needed an O-ring so got to dimension its groove accordingly.

Bloody things. Grr.

I've just put a new expansion tank on and replaced a few hose connector o rings.
Previously I'd bought this https://www.screwfix.com/p/hilka-pro-cr ... -pcs/27385 .
I'm pretty sure it was the R18 size on the main hoses.

Water hose O Ring?

Exactly what happened to me, I was convinced it was leaking from the hose connector towards the bottom of the tank, but when it was hot I managed to look up and see the faintest trail of water from about half way up the expansion tank on the nearside.
Good luck with the swap.

Exactly the same as you bunk58, once warmed up I spotted a thin trickle of coolant comming down the side of the tank and dropping on the lower hose connector which had misled me into thinking it was the O ring in the quick connect that was failing.
I can confirm O Ring R18 in those kits of O rings fits in the quick connect on that lower hose.

As I already had the o rings I thought I'd replace them. The old ones weren't leaking but looked a little flat compared to the new ones, also if they new ones leaked it's a quick job to swap them over.

Pack of 10 22 x 3.5 Nitrile O-Rings here for £2.30 then you won't be left with a box full of rings you will never use.

That's the box I've got; probably had it 15 years. I've thrown more away when I can't be arsed to put them back in the box than I've found jobs for!!

The reality is most of them will never be used but it's a sort of comfort blanket, knowing I have them means I'll never need them. :)

I occasionally feel I should bin the lot to save my blood pressure and just buy ones when I need them, but I'm an optimist. I wonder if these boxes are put together by o-ring manufacturers from all the left overs they make but never sell to industry?!!
