Exhaust doesn't crackle/ pop anymore ?

Post by solo_the_lad » Thu May 25, 2023 10:26 pm

I deleted the muffler from my z4 a while back, and with that alone it would make wonderful crackle and popping noises. But not too long ago it stopped doing it as much. I haven't modified the engine/ exhaust/ intake in any way since the muffler delete. Anyone have any idea on what it could be?

Maybe it's all coked up from the unburnt fuel? :)

That's very strange, something has obviously changed , maybe the fuel mapping but it could be carbon build up.

What do you mean by fuel mapping? As for carbon build up, it seems that would be unlikely since its only got about 76k miles on it, but I don't know much about carbon buildup so I suppose it is possible.

Don’t know if it’s really of any significance in your scenario, but I think on mine the engine and exhaust need to be pretty warmed up for audible burbles when lifting the pedal.

Have you had your hearing tested lately?….

Maybe the un-silenced exhaust has burst your eardrums :tumbleweed:

If you remove the exhaust padding then presumably that reduces back pressure. Could the ECU be sensing this and adjusting timing, fuel or whatever such that popping is reduced.
