I know the :( hard drive music collection is old but, I like things to work

Last time I used, the system would work and I could see music on hard drive from previous owner update etc

But the other day thought I would play some music for the hard drive.

Music was playing but all it says is searching and won’t move music to next track or list anything

Deleted music, imported and music plays but again nothing lists cannot forward to next track and just says ‘searching’

Any ideas?

What's a hard drive? You mean 8-track?

It’s a harddrive you get with the idrive if you have the screen to store music

I can’t help exactly but I have a similar problem with playing music through my phone when it’s connecting via arm rest USB

Sometimes I can see the artwork & can skip other times it’s no artwork & no skipping

Maybe it’s the idrive showing it’s age?

If it's a physical hard drive (rather than an SSD) it's probably the drive dying. I don't know what vintage your car is but 2.5" (ie laptop size) HDDs don't last forever at the best of times, especially when the power saving mode is spinning them up and down a lot.

I presume BMW will have gone for a ruggedised model but being bounced around in a car is still a harsh environment to work in.

Absolutely no idea I'm afraid. I know about the technology; don't know anything about the E89!

As suggested maybe it’s the hard drive dying?

I'm the same! No problem building PCs etc, but I would be surprised if the hard drive is easily accessible in a nice bay in the e89 - probably buried and soldiered in somewhere. :|

It’s relatively pc like so it’s easy enough to swap out …needs thr correct formatting to be used though..various articles on the E90 forums about them failing and others who have put a larger disc in as most of the disc is used for Gracenote and only 12 gb for music..hence the aggressive compression and poor playback quality..

Right guys, as follows....

Yes it's accessible.
Yes it's replaceable.
You'd need a specific HDD type.
You can install a SSD instead.

But nothing is easy!!

But to be honest probably a hell of a lot easier and cheaper to use a USB stick. This is my 64gb drive, nice and small, I also have full album artwork as well, which you don't have with the Music Collection option

I tried it once and the quality playback was poor…as AZ says USB stick or if you have a lot of tracks an old iPhone as an iPod which means access is faster and playlists are easier if you use Apple products..

Thanks all for the feedback and suggestions

I will look at the feeds on changing the hard drive

Have USB and mmi box installed so not desperate as other stuff to fix but it’s the little things that bug the hell out of men when they don’t work.

It’s a 2010 3.0si so getting on maybe a job for the winter
