Roof failure in essex
Hi all,
Unfortunately my Z4 has succumb to the dreaded roof failure, the front catches unlock and the motor winds, but the roof doesn’t lower. Is there any one in the Essex area that can repair/replace said motor.I am based near the Dartford crossing.
Thanks in advance.
Phil

Hi mate,
The only thing is I am due to go into hospital at very short notice for approximately a week or more,so unfortunately if I get called we will have to reschedule.I hope that is acceptable.

Well if it’s closed and watertight then get yourself sorted first. Send me a reminder 2/6 or after and we can discuss.Mr Goodkat wrote: ↑Mon May 22, 2023 11:42 am Hi mate,

I'm sure others such as bigwinn, or Number5, will offer their thoughts too, but if you can still here the motor running but the roof doesn't move then I'm thinking:
1. Pump failure
2. Manual release ring pulled and now seized
3. Hydraulic leak!
Number 3 being the worst case as it is most likely to be a pipe split, but could conceivably also be a leaking ram. Let's hope it's 1 or 2!
Either way, until the motor is in the boot we won't know any more detail.
Were there any signs before it failed?
Did it move slower in either direction? Has the red ring been pulled? Any sign of oily residue on the ground just on front of either rear wheel?

I concur I predict a combination of 2 and low fluid- had one in the week that once topped up and freed off was fine and dandyenuff_zed wrote: ↑Fri Jun 02, 2023 4:16 pm I'm sure others such as bigwinn, or Number5, will offer their thoughts too, but if you can still here the motor running but the roof doesn't move then I'm thinking:

I had one recently that would not work like that.
I got the motor out to discover it had only just been replaced but put back in it's original position.
They had topped the reservoir to the '+' mark, then rebuilt everything. Must have had the roof off to do it I reckon.
Anyway, all rebuilt and hidden away and of course the first couple of operations bled the pipes, after which the fluid level had dropped too far to work.
At least the owner was happy I only had to move it and top it up.
