E46 M3

Met up with a mate today and got to also meet his recently acquired M3. The E46 has aged really well. Purposeful, balanced; they just work.

Finding one that hasn’t been abused is the challenge. Lovely lovely car though.

Yes, he went for the full inspection and thankfully got the full bill of health!

I still worry about that engine. I’d love one but the rod bearings and all that jazz put me off… am I being stupid?
If the forum helped you, why not help the forum back. Thats the Z4 way!

If you want to worry, you can find horror stories about pretty much any 'S' engine. More to do with how some are 'used' and abused than the engineering IMO. :)
Having said the above, I did discount an F series M4 due to issues with the crank 'slipping'. :o

I love the E46 M3. Yet I wouldn't give two beans for any other E46. Still like the E36 'evo' better!
All good things come to those who wait. I'm really impatient which explains a lot.

F31 320i. Good car.
E89 20i Now fully dried
Z3 'free litre'. Project and a half. Complicated!
Mazda3 sold
Tatty old R56 Mini Cooper. Money pit!

The engine is a peach, as long as you are ready to potential bills and some preventative maintenance you’ll be fine.

Go in with your eyes open mind you, they aren’t cheap to maintain, I am well into 5 figures keeping on top of mine! It’s an epic car though and the longest car I have ever owned and I don’t plan on ever selling it.

I’d 100% scratch the itch if you can afford too, it’s a perfect all around package.

I'm very similar to this as well. I've driven a E36 3.0 a few times and I loved it(been a passenger in two different E36 3.2 evos also), whereas when I had a go in an E46 M3 I thought it was a bit too heavy and a bit gutless to drive. I did have the Cerbera at the time so I guess that I was comparing it to that because that was what I was used too.

I had a love/hate relationship with my E92 M3 as well because that was heavy and not a lot seemed to happen performance wise for me below 6000rpm. I don't have any complaints with the performance of the F82 M4 that I have now though to be fair, because that is lighter than the E92 M3, plus it actually has some get up and go low down in the revs too(and I personally really like that because it lights the rear tyres up much easier!). :D :driving:
