My Turn for the Roof to break

Post by Stash36 » Mon May 22, 2023 8:53 am

Hmm, new problem. The roof will open really jerky every now and again, about 1 time in 6 it's happening, on retry it is fine, smooth as usual. I've searched here and found this reported but not intermittent and I've not seen a clear resolution. I've seen suggestions of water or air in the system.
Any ideas, is there a way to bleed it?

No water or air in the closed hydraulic system is possible without opening the hoses manually (or by a broken hose). But, just check the hydraulic fluid level on the reservoir. It should be between middle and up to the top marker.

Do you need to add some lithium grease on the (many) joints and hinges?

No, no lubs is advised and it runs super smoothly 9 times out of 10.
I've been advised to try clean out the fluid reservoir and put fresh fluid in. Anyone done that can talk me through the process?

My Turn for the Roof to break

Update. I thought this jerky roof movement had gone away, now realised it only happens when the engine is running. I have a smart top and tend to open it with three clicks on the remote. If I open or close with the engine running, the jerky roof happens every three or four cycles. It doesnt happen at all with e gone off. Does that inform any ideas?

@RobbiZ4 Should all of the joints in the roof mechanism NEVER be lubricated?

Well, my current view is NO, NEVER, as most of the joints contain an inner bushing. There is a minor exception regarding the rear roof shell, where its 2x2 locking hooks grab around their bolts.
