Our 2010 23i runs the 6-pot non-turbo dragged mercilessly from the ‘80s and we love it.

I like to think I have a logical view without any bullsh1t attached.
everyone is entitled to their opinion, though.
PS. I am not from the Fens. I am a soft, shandy-swilling southerner. I just live here, for my sins!
All good things come to those who wait. I'm really impatient which explains a lot.

Firstly good choice! We all have personal preferences, I am more of an E85/E86 fan. If it were an E89 I prefer the six cylinder variants and would go for the 3.0l but this is all personal preference!

To also weigh in on this, my experience is that the e89 is by far the better 'car', esp if long motorway trips are part of life, and if I were to only be able to have one vehicle, a 6-pot well-specked e89 would be my go-to. However, by good fortune that isn't my position, and as a fun thing to have, for me, the e85 wins hands down.

It depends what you want and your budget, if you want a cheap weekend convertible fun car an E85 is hard to beat
There are good 2.5 or 3.0 6 cyl that are a no brainer at £3000 or so, later facelift models have nice improvements. Automatic are good too at similar cost make driving in traffic easier, engines need to be properly maintained, later models have pros and cons at £10k plus, all are good car, decide on you price point and try a few.
