Post by AshP » Sat Apr 15, 2023 5:23 pm

Hi everyone,
I am new member of the forum, 6 months in and finally picked up my first Z4 today. I'm so very happy with my car, its everything I hoped it would be.

This forum has been a great help to me, so many helpful people and great advice.

If there are any other Z4 owners from Essex/South East area on here, then it would be good to hear from you. Always happy for a meet up and drive around this neck of the woods, also interested in meets and events.

No way! What a coincidence. Its my wife's birth town too. We like it here. Some nice country lanes out this way and a few good pubs. You will know that already if you once lived here.

I was born in the hospital (we lived in Westcliff), but moved to Suffolk when I was a baby in the 70s. I’ve never been back since but sometimes think I should go check it out.

That's cool. I know suffolk reasonably well. It's very nice. I was just reading about your sapphire black project. Very interesting read and great what you have done to it to bring it back to life. Can you advise on how to clean and protect rubber seals? Mine are ok, but I want to make sure they stay thar way. I was considering getting a cover too as i font have a garage but some people advise against it. I'm south facing so uv is a real concern of mine.

Thanks  For the rubber, I use Gummi Pflege, but also Autoglym Vinyl and Rubber restorer. TBH anything half decent that keeps them supple is going to be better than nothing at all.

Cover wise, I have a Halfords outdoor fleece lined medium sized one I had to buy in an emergency when my garage flooded out, but as you mentioned, its not great for paintwork long term. There may be better [more expensive] outdoor covers that people on here could recommend.

Any silicone-based rubber care stuff will sort your seals. Gummi Pflege is a popular quality brand, but I use Auto Glym (as I have loads of it and it's easy to apply and does the same job). It's good to re-apply as often as you reasonably can. You can't really overdo it.

Outdoor covers is a contentious issue. I had a Stormforce (expensive) one for a while and thought it would be brilliant, as it is breathable, soft, triple-layered, blah blah blah. I found the car would 'sweat' badly underneath and was doing more harm than good. Plus outdoor covers tend to be big and heavy and a pain to dry and store when not on the car. I never, ever managed to fold my cover small enough to get back in the bag!

I would recommend no outdoor cover but look after the car externally as often as you can.
All good things come to those who wait. I'm really impatient which explains a lot.

F31 320i. Good car.
E89 20i Now fully dried
Z3 'free litre'. Project and a half. Complicated!
Mazda3 sold
Tatty old R56 Mini Cooper. Money pit!

That's really helpful. Thank you for the advice. Others have told me of the importance of keeping the car clean and waxed to help protect the car from the elements. I have also had the half cover recommended to help protect the roof. Lots to think about being a new owner of an older car for the first time. I appreciate all the support and advice you and others can offer on the forum. It's a great resource. Thanks again.
