funny, i'm just about to move out of a 986S into a 987.1S boxster. i'm looking forward to a considerably more modern and spacious cabin than the 986 was! horses for courses though, the most modern car ive owned was made in 2008.

    I came from a 986 Boxster to E85 Z4.
The Boxster was amazing to drive but too good for me, the handling, precision and engine absolutely sublime. I just found I had to drive it beyond my capabilities to get it to be exciting if that makes sense!! I can drive the Z at legal speeds and still get the excitement we all want. Similar to my youth - I had 205 Gti's 1.6 and 1.9 and and the 1.6 was always the most enjoyable.

Great read, thanks for sharing as a 981 Boxster is on my list as possible next purchases.... The comments confirm my thoughts regarding a 987.2, when I sat in one just felt it was aging.
Also thinking better to have a 2.7 driven hard than an S driven at 7/10ths because it would be too quick. :?

Pretty much my sentiment Its a lot of fun driven hard and you get the most out the engine note too, it showed an indicated 100 flat out in 3rd at 7.5k revs (on my favourite private road of course) I'm sure the same in the S would be another 15 or 20 mph, you certainly couldnt drive the S as hard on uk roads
if its got tits or tyres..its trouble :D

Welcome to the club Mr T.

There is something about Guards Red. It just seems that everyone is looking at you or wants to comment on the car

I hope you enjoy it 👍

Looks lovely that, how do you find the engine? I think it’s a brilliant bit of kit and doesn’t deserve the negativity surrounding it.

Thanks buddy, yours looks fantastic, those are the exact wheels I am after getting next year they were very expensive option when new.. about 3.5k from what I've seen, believe they were standard on your gts

Have to admit Guards Red was not really my first choice colour, I thought it a bit "in your face" :D but the car was best condition/service history/spec Id seen in my budget and its definitely growing on me after sticking with more subtle colour for the last 20 odd years

I went from a nice low mileage, manual 987.2 to my current ZM. I found the Cayman S too capable. It made you want to drive like you knew you were not waking up the next day. It was a way better car than my driving skills. I can understand the boxster choice if you wanted a bit of the same feel. I changed to the Z4M roadster as I thought I would get a similar sort of feeling at a lower speed. What I got was a completely different experience that was (I don't want to describe it as rougher) giving more thrill way less down the death range.

That is a very apt description Trav, driving the Cayman is like driving with a little devil on your shoulder constantly egging you on to drive like a twunt :D.. it can be a lot of fun when you are in the mood for it but its so focused you cant just have a regular commute to work or a sunny day cruise out with the missus, the 981 boxster seems to be able to do both with ease
