Any electricians out there

2003 E85 3.0i Auto.

I am installing flappy paddles. I have got the steering wheel with flappy paddles, a slip ring with the right connections and all the wiring. The wiring should be really simple. The flappy paddles just provide a “ground” when activated, which mimics what the sequential +/- lever does. I have spliced two wires into the gearchange and if I ground these wires in “sport manual” mode they change the gear indicator up and down - so far so good - but the flappy paddles do not work.

I need to test whether:
(A) the flappy paddles are providing a “ground”; and
(B) the slip ring is carrying the “ground” signal to the wires spliced into the gearchange.

I have a multimeter. How do I test both of the above?

Photo of all the steering wheel wiring for reference.

Find a good earth (ground/ negative) on the car. Stick your meter in 'continuity' mode, put one lead on the good earth and the other on your negative and you should get a 'beep', and/or 0 ohms if your ground wire is good. The higher the ohms reading, the worse the connection with earth on the car.
All good things come to those who wait. I'm really impatient which explains a lot.
