Ctek/Bmw Charger

Post by Validwarlord » Sun Mar 19, 2023 7:47 am

Morning All

Going to be a decent day today according to the forecast so going to fit the eyelet charging lead that comes with the Ctek/Bmw charger to the charging points under the bonnet pretty simple job but would I need to disconect the battery whilist I do this?

I will be looking to do this set up (Photo from another post)

I wouldn’t have thought so. Where are you going to put the connector bit?

Yes. Are you going to make it accessible without lifting the bonnet?

I’m fitting the smart top this morning. Was going to do it yesterday but it kept lashing it down every hour or so and have to take car out of garage to do it for easy access. I too use a CTEK when car isn’t been used for weeks on end but I am thinking of fitting the eyelets but with the connector accessible from the outside so I don’t have to open the bonnet all the time.

Let me know how the Smart Top install goes looking to get one of these very soon around £325 so a considered purchase (Or so the wife says) and also keep me posted on your project concerning the Ctek connector.

Tbh dont mind raising the bonnet to connect this unit

I agree lifting bonnet no problem, I’ve been doing it for a year, just don’t want to stretch the cable with over use, also garage a bit tight with other toys (motorcycles) so have to be a contortionist to even get in the car never mind reaching in to reach the bonnet release thing.

Totally understand although new built houses dont seem to have large garages so its full with other things so the car has to stand on the drive motorbike was not being ridden so it had to go and fund the Z4 (Such is life)

Good luck with the install today going to buy one so would be good to have your thoughts?

There is a space just above the connector where it fits snuggly and out the way (don't have to worry about water ingress as it has a rubber cap), my CTEK also has an extended cable, so its doesn't get overstretched. Thats my car in the pics.

Has anyone put the connector anywhere accessible from the outside so you don’t have to open the bonnet? I had a quick look at doing it yesterday but couldn’t find anywhere suitable to leave the connector without the risk of it getting very wet.

SmartBear did his do so you could access through the front grill..no need to have the bonnet up..
We choose to go to on with this endeavour at this time and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard..

just for my understanding, why are people connecting to these terminals, rather than the battery terminals?

I have mine set up with wireless power... just don't stand in the stream of electrons for more than a few seconds... it has a numbing sensation -- I think its banned in California. :fuelfire:
