Air bag code 9853

Post by Simonsen » Sun Mar 12, 2023 7:22 pm

Hi all I have a air bag light coming on 9853, driver stage 2 squib, short circuit.
As it states squib I changed squib under steering wheel air bag and no luck. Module in centre console looks OK with no visible rust or damp what could be at fault?

The only other part of the system is the slip ring. I suppose it's possible the 2 airbag wires have worn thru and shorted together. Worth a quick test with a meter (airbag disconnected!)

Good shout

I’ve replaced two recently that had failed and were causing intermittent airbag lights

It's funny. I read this thread Sunday and couldn't think of anything to add. Yesterday the X5 airbag light came on so I plugged it in after lunch today - "driver airbag intermittent open circuit." First thought was clockspring as the most likely culprit. Second thought was this topic!

Ooh, good call and I certainly shall if the light comes back. It hadn't occurred to me that it might be the same part on an E53 but it is!

I changed squib with ring so don't think it's that. Since then I got additional code 952B.
As much as I like my z4 it's doing my head in at the moment, bag lights, misted headlights, water in foot well.

Any chance the water in the foot well could have affected one of the B-pillar airbag modules then?

Dumbass me on my code reader it clearly states SBLS. Satelite B-pillar left. And thats where the code is stored.
What does that mean to me? Where is it based and what could be the problem?

If that is the side where the damp issue is then it's probably goosed the module.
It sits in the bottom outer corner under the carpet behind the seat. There's one either side and a central control module at the rear of the transmission tunnel, under the coin tray..
You need to get it out and get the part number off it, then use Realoem (or ask on here) to find a compatible replacement. It will need coding to your car.
The two prime causes of the wet floor there are either the door membrane is damaged, or the drain hole in the well that the roof motor sits in is blocked and water is running over and into the cabin.

Air bag code 9853

Post by Simonsen » Wed Mar 15, 2023 1:45 pm

Thanks for all the info. To be fair since I bought the car when I was closing doors they sounded like they were empty inside so I assumed door membrane were buggered so I ordered new ones - project for tomorrow. What needs to be removed to get to that module behind the seats. Also it says left does it mean passenger one? I am guessing so?

Assuming you have a UK car? Yes, passenger side.
If you pop off the inner sill trim you can lift the carpet and see the module at the back. You will need to remove the smaller retaining trim in the rear corner to get enough access.
Be very careful with the two plugs as they can be brittle and one of them is a fibre-optic connection.

This thread shows what you are looking for.

Hi its UK standard car, so took off door cards and membrane is in mint condition not a scratch on them, left module looks good with no visible sign of water damage nor rust. Cleand it seal it I will check if its working later on. But big question is where that water is coming from??
