4 warning lights popped up

Post by Dr. Zed » Sun Mar 12, 2023 5:39 pm

Evening all,

Was driving along the motor way and the tyre pressure, ABS and the exclamation mark warning all popped on, also accompanied by the Amber warning symbol that sits in the rev counter (the A with the arrow going around it, which I believe is the traction control). Anyways, I've found similar threads here with people saying it can range from steering wheel angle sensor, ABS sensor or DTC sensor, but all of those threads had 3 warning lights, I have 4.
I haven't ran a scan yet and won't be able to till next weekend.
Any early suggestions?

First thing for me would be to check the tyre pressures are OK, and if so then reset that light and see it if stays off.

Mainly as it's the only one I could do.

When you get all four it is usually an abs sensor. Need a code reader to say which one. If the Speedo still works it’s not rear left.
The other possibilities tend not to put the tyre warning light on

Cheers mate,

I'll get it read when I get home this weekend. Away from the house for a week unfortunately.
If it's an ABS sensor then that's not too bad. Reckon it'll be a case I can clean them, or needs replacing. Or hard to say without reading codes and checking the sensor?

Thanks Paul,
I can't imagine it'll be the tyre pressure as I checked them before starting my journey and I doubt it'd cause my other lights to come on.

To be clear, it's not a 100% definite, but I've always found it to be one with the tyre light on too. Others may have different opinions.
They are sealed units and either work or don't, so swap for a new one.
If it's rear right then there is also a possibility it is the reluctor ring (the cage with the holes in that provides the signal pulse) as these are separately fitted and do corrode.
On the front the sensor reads more robust ridges on the inner face of the hub. On these front ones the biggest issue you will encounter is not shearing the mounting bolt. Plenty of penetrating oil, maybe a bit of heat applied, and go very careful.

Out of interest, did you hit any standing water or mud? This could give issues with the sensors as well. In which case it never hurts to clean around the hubs in case any debris has become wedged in there.

Wheel speed sensors are cheap as chips so I wouldnt bother with cleaning them, just get a new one although you would do well to get a small paintbrush in the hole and give the reluctor ring a clean.

enuff_zed,
Thanks for the info mate

It hadn't driven for about 2 days on the day it popped up and didn't have any issues beforehand.

I know you're saying it's not 100% but it's a good direction for me to look in. I'll get it scanned to confirm but at least it doesn't seem like it's going to cost a fortune which is always good!

So, here's an update after running the code reader on it.
Seems to be the speed sensor, and not the ABS sensor. Would I be right in assuming that?

Although the lights have since gone out..?

Funny enough, mine did exactly the same this morning. Plugged in my reader and it was the front nearside sensor too. Cleared the code an all seems well 🤞🤞

I've cleared the codes too and haven't come back since but still don't like the idea of it as it seems quite serious so I'm a little concerned still..

Looking at what you have, there seem to be codes for various wheel sensors. However, we don't know how long they've all been there.
I would suggest that until the fault happens again you won't be able to exactly determine which one it is.
Keep your code reader in the car and when it happens again immediately check the codes and hopefully that will give clearer indication.
Usually these kind of things fail a bit like a light bulb, as in, when you switch them on and off. That is why I asked whether you'd been through deep water or muddy roads as it seemed odd for it to happen mid-journey.
Keep watching it.
If it does occur again it means you won't have the DSC active, so just drive a little more cautiously round sharp bends, off roundabouts etc.
In effect, your Z4 becomes a Capri until you reset it
