If you want a rust free XK Jag you need to look at a X150 (2006 onwards) and not the X100, they rot around the rear quarters, sills and floorpan. The later model is all aluminium, still have to watch out for aluminium oxidisation on the panel / door edges etc. on the early cars. (bit like some of the E89 roof panels) https://youtu.be/K7BO7i9pmaQ

Selling a Mazda3 and replacing it with a Golf R seems such a logical option I can’t think why no-one presented it sooner?! And you keep the Zed. Win-win. And Mrs Pondrew has a driver win-win-win

If you're happy with the condition etc. of your Mazda, why not buy the Golf and give the Mazda to your daughter...?
Although that will deprive us of another multi-page thread in which you agonise over choosing between 27 different cars to buy your daughter, only to finally settle on an electric tricycle...

I'm not Rockafella! She isn't having a £12k car gifted to her at 17!
I'm here to serve!

Ok - duaghter's ar is simple. VW Polo, very cheap to insure, decent price to buy and very nice to drive and is not the usual chav car like Clio or Corsa. When ours turned 17 (they are 15 months apart in age), we got a Polo for £3k, was £600 to insure for both of them and we had it for 3 years without any issues and I did the maintenance on it.
Sold it for £1200 within an hour of listing it.

Yes, I am keen on a Polo for her, for the same reasons as you can't beat a Golf (she only cares about the colour!). The other option is a Pug 208. Depends on insurance costs, though.

Got to be a manual. That's the deal breaker for the wife, she won't drive an automatic!
Reduces the choice, though, as most were bought new with the DCT.
I've been looking at insurance costs for a car for my daughter. Usual suspects: Fiesta, Polo, 208, Clio, Fiat 500 (!) even Yaris. For some bizarre reason the Mini One is coming out quite a lot cheaper than all the others, and the prices of the cars are very similar to the others too.
I need to research if there are any inherent issues with 2011-13 Minis!

You are right about the DCT box though, when my son was deciding between the new 140 and the R, he could not get a test drive in an R as he wanted a manual. The DCT left him stone cold.
The discount on the new BMW was bigger as well, the drive was better as he could test the manual, so he went with that.

Cost of bits may be part of this. We looked at them for my son. He ended up going for the Peugeot. Cheaper insurance bigger engine than the rest his renewal came in yesterday and dropped £600 after 1 years driving.
Just had a thought while typing this, iirc I also ran them through the comparison sites as if he’d passed his test and the Mini was substantially more when he was no longer supervised.

Did it both ways, mate. Mini One is coming out at £770 as a newly qualified driver with me and her mum as named drivers. I think that's cheap for a 17 year old with 0 experience. I know it helps that she is female!Argyll Andy wrote: ↑Thu Apr 06, 2023 12:26 pm Just had a thought while typing this, iirc I also ran them through the comparison sites as if he’d passed his test and the Mini was substantially more when he was no longer supervised.

That’s cheap, the wee fellas, with me as a names driver, was £1592 once passed and renewal £992. That’s based on annual mileage of 9000 with black boxPondrew wrote: ↑Thu Apr 06, 2023 12:42 pmDid it both ways, mate.
