Stag or Jag?

Post by Pondrew » Sun Feb 12, 2023 7:58 pm

As some will know I have sort of decided to get a British 'modern classic' car to play with.

I have seen a really nice Jag XJS (4.0L) coupe and a really nice looking Stag Mk1 for similar money. The Stag is Java green but hey-ho.

I don't really know much about either but if you had to decide between a 1991 Jag XJS or a 1973 Stag, which would you lean toward, and why?

Cheers!

Stag - it has done its breaking down whilst the Jag is in the middle of that stage. The Jag xjs is ugly as hell as well.

Same money? Thought the XJS were pretty worthless

They have increased in price - they were about £5k

For me, Stag every time.

Did try, many moons ago in my youth, tried to buy a midnight blue one but was out bid.

Was warned about the cylinder heads occasionally seizing on, and the bottom half of the engine having to be dropped to change a cylinder head gasket. Was told to ask before purchasing one if the rods holding the cylinder head to the block had been coated with copper slip to prevent this happening.

Not a mechanic but just passing on what I was told in case you go for the Stag

If you'd ever find 4 seats handy it has to be the Stag. And if the XJS is a 4 litre, still the Stag!

But I'd find a 5.3 litre XJS hard to resist - why have a V8 when you could have a V12?

They are definitely 'on the rise'. XJS prices range from £3k to £42k on the net. :o

The 'Stag' thing seems to have had it's day (for now). Prices are a lot lower than they were.

I was just looking on pistonheads and saw that one from 1991. I would never spend that on an xjs.

Stag is class though

Stag or Jag?

Post by bigwinn » Sun Feb 12, 2023 9:30 pm

I’ve never got the whole stag thing personally and I’ve owned some triumphs including a gt6… I don’t get why they are so coveted- but that’s personal opinion

Jag every time for me on that basis
If the forum helped you, why not help the forum back. Thats the Z4 way!

The breakdowns won't be an issue (with either TBH) as I am not planning on driving it! :o
For my personal purposes the Stag is probably the better bet, as they are simpler, smaller, parts are readily available at lower cost.
I have always liked the look of a Stag; it's a pretty car (maybe not so much in baby-sick green).
I would like to get a fairly good base car and make it excellent without sending away to have major works done. I get a great sense of achievement with 'improving' things. I did it with houses for years, so cars is a natural progression now.

And the one in the video is a mile up the road!

I like the red (wine) colour aswell mate. I do quite like the mimosa yellow (even though I hate yellow cars generally). It's not really about the shade, more about the right base car.
I wanted a blue Focus ST......got a red one because it was the best one I could find
I wanted a white E92......got a sapphire black one for the same reasons
I wanted a snapper rocks F33......got a mineral grey because it was the best one I could find

For me the paint colour is just the 'frosting'. I'm more interested in the cake underneath! :P
