Garmin dash cams

Post by B21 » Thu Feb 09, 2023 8:06 pm

Been chewing over dash cams, in the end I’ve gone with a Garmin 57 for the front camera a Garmin Mini 2 for the rear.

Front camera will mount behind the pax side of the mirror and the back will peek through the pax rear roll hoop through the mesh. I’ll need to fabricate a small pedestal to mount the rear camera..plus the image will be inverted ..but that can be corrected post processing.

The 57 camera has a GPS so that provides speed, time and location data that the Mini 2 piggy backs off.

Power feed is always an issue…I’m taking out the front smokers ash tray so I’ve retrieved the power socket from it and will use a usb power plug to power both cameras..unfortunately the sockets lose power when the car is shutdown..I’ll just live with that compromise.

The cameras are really dinky..

These things are constantly improving. A few years ago a buddy installed a Chinese front and rear pair on his RT1200. He swore by it. I can ask him what they were. One neat feature was that they recorded for 5 minutes after main power shutdown. Interesting things happen after a crash.

You can also set the battery saving option whereby the camera only switches off from parking mode when the car battery reaches below a user defined setting. Can be left on for many hours after parking.
Current:
911-50 Black - unique spec
X5M - 575 hp of fun in a V8
Abarth 595 Comp.
Golf Clipper - collectors item
Z4 3.0si Black Sapphire
VW ID.3

Previous:
Z4M Silver Grey - non flimper spec (gone to Bing)
Z4 3.0 Toledo

It will be interesting to see your solution for mounting the rear camera.

I will be too…

Need someone with a 3D printer to make me a small pedestal to screw to the trim and stick the camera on with a 45 degree slope on top…

There may be an option in the cameras operating software to invert the image, there is in my BlackVue

Couldn’t find it in the Garmin s/w AFAIK…not a big issue as I’ll only pull it in the event of an ‘incident’ :tumbleweed:

Trial fitting of the rear Garmin Mini 2 with 3 D printed pedestal looks good..

Yes it’s a good solution..but it clogs the OBD port up and has cables in the cockpit which I don’t like..hence the cigarette socket buried under the centre trim :

So got both dash cams up and running using my 3D printed rear pedestal in an approx location peering through the headrest..

Works well, if an inverted image (which can be post processed..

The rear window seems to have no impact as can be seen, neither peering through the gauze..which picture has the roof down..

Test in garage not the most conclusive but heh..

Obviously the Garmin 57 forward facing camera was relatively easy..duff Garmin USB charger didn’t help..

The Garmin in the XC60 saved the Mrs' bacon when was hit from behind by an Ambulance.

IMO great features are:
- on-demand smartphone download & full config in their user friendly mobile App
- speed camera warning inc OTA updates via mobile
- warns you when memory card needs replacing
- lots of sounds & settings fully configurable
- front + rear dashcam sync
- magnetic mount means super easy for cleaning yet zero vibration

Great bit of kit - have them fitted in all cars now

Yes not the cheapest but as you say removes any ambiguity….just hope the police don’t ask for a copy when we do the NC500 next month… :tumbleweed:

Thinking of fitting them to the other cars..
