Alloy wheel repair - typical costs?

Post by bonzo » Tue Jan 31, 2023 10:28 am

I've managed to scrape the extreme outer edge of one of my rear wheels. The scrape is approx 4-5 inches in size and pretty unobtrusive visually.

However, it's bugging me so I'm going to see how much it would cost to get it cleaned up.

Any ideas as to how much I should expect to pay?

Many thanks.

You could try yourself. I had scrape on one of mine. I used sanding pads that I had left from when I did my headlights on my old e85. I don't know much about about sanding things but these are very fine and worked along with the cleaner and polisher. I suppose it depends on how deep the scratches are. hope this helps.

I did the same last year, made me very angry but once I calmed down and stopped crying I carefully used some silver paint I had in the garage with a small brush. More to protect it than for looks, I only notice it when I wash the car and just live with it until they all need doing.

I did a light scrape a couple of years back, I was quoted around £200 to fix it.

Didn’t bother in the end, I don’t even notice it anymore :)

Alloy wheel repair - typical costs?

I've just called a couple of companies who've quoted me between £120 and £144. Apparently they have to refurb the whole wheel which seems a bit over the top considering how minimal the damage is. It looks like I'll leave it and probably fix before swapping the car. Thanks for the replies.

Shop around!

I had all 4 refurbed last spring for £320.

Depending on your location on FB at the mo. there is a company in Chelmsford offering a deal of £200 for all 4 :o

Full refurb is typically 75-125 per wheel. You could try a smart repair place, they can work wonders. DIY is easy but won’t be perfect.

There's a lot of alloy wheel refurbishers out there but choose after reading reviews. I paid £160 for two wheels on an MX-5 around 4 years ago and they were as good as new afterwards.

I got a set of wheels for my car acid dipped and powder coated for £280 in 2020 by a firm in Basingstoke and they did a great job.

But for the quotes you are getting maybe it needs more than that.
