Powder coated wheel smart repair?

Post by inkey$ » Thu Jan 26, 2023 5:37 pm

Can scratches on powder coated wheels be fixed through smart repair? One of the 107’s I just bought - with freshly powder coated finish - were slightly damaged in transit and its not helping my OCD

I am planning on touching-up a rim I recently had to de-buckle and that also has some rash, will probbaly be more DIY than SMART so will keep an eye on that thread... Or feedback if I end up going for it before you
Gone - Ford Ka MK2 Petrol - Black
Will hang around to carry materials/people and in emergency - Ford Fiesta MK7 1.0 Ecoboost - Black, white rally rims, white decals, remapped
Now - Z4 Coupe - Montego Blue: Here

 Good luck!
Reading into it a bit, I may try wet-sanding back with fine grit paper and trying to polish out. Adding paint I think is risky due to the solvents.

In your case it seems like a valid option

In mine I'll have to locally sand all the loose lacquer and scratches, and then do some paint and lacquer blending, if it succeeds it'll save me money or if it fails I'll learn, have fun and end up paying anyway :driving:

Thats the headspace I’m in at the moment too! Give it a go, learn - and if it fails either live with it or get a wheel re-powdercoated.

Okay - Im not going to try this after all. Feels too risky given the pristine nature of the powder coated finish and I really don't want to make matters worse.

Luckily the guy I bought them from isnt happy with the courier either and is going to redo the alloy for me FOC, so although it means waiting a little longer to put on the car, they’ll all be lovely at the end of it all.

I would give that a go I think you will get a pretty good half way between without a respray
