Today it was dry enough to try and clean the car - at least a basic clean anyway. I drove to my local team of car washers, selected Silver service and the did the outside, inside, door shuts and glass taking the bulk of the work out of it for me.
Drove home and finished various bits off myself. Post wash is when you really get to know a car. Every imperfection is found and things hiding beneath layers of dust and dirt suddenly present themselves.
To be honest, its not too bad, although the car is far from mint. At some point in its life the rear wing has been resprayed as its duller than the sapphire black its supposed to be. A machine polish might help that out - or a replacement wing - or I just live with it
The rear bumper has a few scratches but nothing too hectic and again, many should buff out. Hardly any dents - just one or two small dings you really have to search for.
The passenger door has what looks like oxidation underneath some of the paint. Are these doors aluminium? Possibly the first thing I’ll look to get, if I can secure a sapphire black passenger door one day and just swap them over.
I also replaced the ageing and unusable wipers with Bosch Super Plus 20 and 21 blades (half price in Halfords at the moment), then cleaned the engine bay a little, treated all the rubber to some gummi pfledge, refreshed the black exterior trim and buffed up the pipes. The headlights need refurbishing as they’re very cloudy, so that will be next up on the bodywork jobslist. I want to clean and waterproof the hood too.
Overall though, she scrubs up pretty well.

I’m pretty sure only the bonnet is Aluminium. Door skins are steel, but you can test with a magnet of course.

Thats what I thought. Maybe its a lacquer reaction as opposed to emerging rust.

Z4 drove beautifully, I was shocked at how quite, smooth and rattle free a 100k and 15 year old car could be, but the journey was a nightmare compounded by waiting in Halifax for nearly 4 hour for the money transfer to go through as the building society decides to do a security check of the funds without notification of the fact...any.....washed n clean and tucked up in its garage until I find the time to check everything through, but I can't fault the way it drives....BMW certainly know how to put a car together. (Thanks for asking BTW)

Always happens when you’re in a rush to get driving. Looking forward to seeing pictures and hearing more, TomTOMGREEN413 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 15, 2023 7:28 pm Z4 drove beautifully, I was shocked at how quite, smooth and rattle free a 100k and 15 year old car could be, but the journey was a nightmare compounded by waiting in Halifax for nearly 4 hour for the money transfer to go through as the building society decides to do a security check of the funds without notification of the fact...any.....washed n clean and tucked up in its garage until I find the time to check everything through, but I can't fault the way it drives....BMW certainly know how to put a car together. Too cold to replace the centre and side vents/cupholders or Bluetooth module today, so I did what any normal person would do in 2 degrees C and added a Peugeot stubby.

Counting the days until springtime and I can bust out the DA polisher
Plans include full Insp 2, ECU and module update and 60k mile health check (Monday), followed by remedial OEM work. I love the pre-facelift in black (dem rear lights ), so bodywork up to scratch, 107 wheels to replace the 108s, heated electric MSport seats and possibly some suspension upgrades and intake work. Nothing extreme, just aiming for a finished quality example.
