Hello, I just bought a 2004 z4 2.2i se today, after viewing it I thought it was great and decided to pick it up, the roof worked and I put it up and down twice with a 20min interval inbetween, I drove it home (40mins) then leave it for maybe an 4 hours I come back to show my friend the roof and the roof isn’t coming down, the widows go down and it unlatchs but then after that it doesn’t to anything and the button flashes. There was no rain or anything inbetween these few hours does anyone have an explanation?

Welcome to the forum, and Z4 ownership.

Sorry I can't offer any advice regarding your roof as I've only had Coupes! But hopefully someone will be able to help out.

If the fault lies with the roof motor there are a few people who can often revive them and relocate them into the boot to stop them getting water-logged.
Coupes because stunning!

Welcome aboard. :) Much knowledge of roof issues on the forum and they can all be sorted. Hopefully some one along soon to make a few relevant suggestions.

Did you put anything big in the boot or move the roof spacer/shelf up?

Welcome to the forum, annoying about the roof but as buzyg says someone on here will know what’s wrong.
Now, Sterling grey Z4 2.2 with cup holders, stubby aerial and sport seats. Roadsters ‘cause they’re great with the roof down.

I drove it down a pretty bumpy road and there was nothing in the boot, I just moved the parcel shelf down and having the same problem, not sure if it could be related at all but the car key seems to be locking from less far away and less constantly.

I’d be checking your micro switch in the boot

That’s the usual root of all evil

Ensure the notch in the parcel shelf is correctly located in on the micro switch
If the forum helped you, why not help the forum back. Thats the Z4 way!

Check the shelf is properly down and locked in position. As above there is a micro switch there somewhere. I don't know where.

Check the manual lowering pull is in. LHS of the boot. It pulls out and twists to lower the roof manually. Maybe pull it out deliberately, check the roof works manually lowers and raises, ie nothing jamming, then set it back in place and try again on the motor.

Key is a red herring.

Personally I wouldn’t touch that red handle as it is likely to jam the bypass valve in leaving you manual only. Is the roof motor working? Pretty sure if the windows drop and the front unlatched it won’t be the microswitch in the boot. That doesn’t allow anything to happen! I think I’d be going back to bigwinn for more info on wiring loom breaks tbh.

Welcome to the forum and to the Z4 ownership. This sounds like a cable/wiring problem. Try to dangle the wire, as I have Euro model - LHD, it is above my head.

If the micro switch is ok, then the wiring is bad, and losing connection I had this problem like forever, and finally ordered a new set of wiring and give it to a BMW specialist. Now it works like a charm.

More than likely the parcel shelf is not in the down position, it has to be in that position otherwise the roof wont retract and fold. Since the car is new to you it might be that you have turned the shelf knobs in the boot to the high position not knowing how the system works.
Always a good idea to relocate the roof motor to the boot to avoid water damage happening to the motor, search the forum for details on how to relocate, its a bit of a faff but worth doing, Youtube videos on how to are worth watching. Otherwise there are members on here who can do the job at decent prices. No doubt one of them will be along here offering their services.
Update your user details so your location shows up on the left of your posts together with car model details, its handy to know where you are when replying to your posts.

Still think from experience that with the parcel shelf up nothing happens except a flashing amber light. In this case though the Windows drop etc.

Correct. If it was a shelf issue, the windows wouldnt even start to drop and it would be an orange LED

The windows drop and the roof unlocks and then nothing. Since your totally new to this car, I'll ask you a few questions.

Do you know if the roof motor has been relocated to the trunk/boot? If unsure go to your trunk/boot and look at the rear left corner, is there a metal device with wires and tubes running into it? If yes, is the metal old looking and maybe rusty or new looking.
