Sounds daft but it may be a more solid result?
That sounds like a big job to me, probably above my skill level
I'll do it for a couple of days free holiday in Devon. 8)

Now, Sterling grey Z4 2.2 with cup holders, stubby aerial and sport seats. Roadsters ‘cause they’re great with the roof down.

Door mirror glass replacement

Post by MikeyH » Tue Dec 13, 2022 12:16 pm

Received my new mirror in the post today, however as you can see the new one on the right has a different backing. The one on the left is the one that came off the car and has a ring that is turned to clip it off and on. Does this ring need to be removed and fitted to the new one? Being careful as I don’t want to break anything. Your help is much appreciated.

Thank you. It seems to be impossible to to remove without breaking it. Is there a correct way or just brute force?

I think you bought the wrong mirror. Is doesn't look to be BMW. They always have their part numbers and logo molded in the plastic. Just send it back you either ordered the wrong one or they sent the wrong part.

Look at the retaining tabs on your new mirror piece. This should give an indication of where the fastening points on the broken mirror are located. You just need to go careful and work on the first tab til you feel something come loose. Work carefully on the 2nd tab around, then it should come loose.

It’s totally different as it has circle that needs turning to clip it into the housing.

Wife to the rescue. She managed, with a lot of care, pulled the mirror away from the new backing and with some silicone from Halfords I have glued the new mirror onto the old backing. Now drying in the house overnight for me to refit in the morning. Yay! I have kept the numbers of the old backing and will look for a genuine BMW part in case it falls off again. Thank you all for your help.

Door mirror glass replacement

Post by MikeyH » Sat Feb 04, 2023 12:13 am

And today came home from a nice afternoon drive with the wife, I shut the drivers door, guess what, yep now got the drivers door mirror to replace. Wife says it’s an old car, what do I expect, I say it’s a crappy, badly made piece of German junk. :headbang: My wife’s Ford Focus is better made than this.
